Waimea High School graduate and current Detroit Lions linebacker Jordon Dizon has completed his community service requirement, and has actually done more, despite a recent report which stated otherwise.
The Daily Camera reported that a judge planned to issue a bench warrant for his arrest because he allegedly failed to show proof of community service. Dizon’s lawyer Peter Schaffer went on the record with the paper saying that the proper documents had already been faxed over to the prosecutors’ office.
That story was later picked up by The Associated Press and subsequently by the local media, much to the dismay of his family.
Schaffer told The Garden Island yesterday that Dizon had completed his community service two months ago and that the situation had been a paper error. He said that the district attorney’s office never planned on taking any action and that the Daily Camera reporter should never have run with the story.
“An outstanding citizen such as Jordon Dizon should never have to go through this,” Schaffer said.
Instead of merely completing the mandatory 24 hours of community service for a drunken driving conviction, Dizon, who turns 23 years old today, enjoyed his tasks and voluntarily did more, according to his mother, Darla Higa.
Higa said she received two e-mails from Boulder County prosecutors apologizing for the negative press and the discussion of whether or not Dizon had in fact completed his community service should have never been an issue. Higa also said that negative press circulating around Dizon was unfair to him because he had done all his work, and more.
Higa said that the prosecutors confirmed that all his paperwork was in order and everything was all taken care of.
Dizon graduated from the University of Colorado last May with a degree in economics and was drafted by the Lions in the second round, 45th overall.
He completed his rookie season with the Lions last month, on the injured/reserve list.
The Lions made history by finishing the season 0-16. Then head coach Rod Marinelli was fired and a new head coach was introduced yesterday. (See related story above.)
Dizon has been on island spending time at his favorite local spots.
