Scott Ashworth and Michael Castillo were two of Kaua‘i’s golfing professionals who were honored at last night’s Hawai‘i Golf Ho‘olaule‘a Awards at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
It was the first time all of golf’s allied associations got together to celebrated the industry’s best. Members of the Aloha Section PGA, Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association and more were witness at the event where Ashworth received the Golf Professional of the Year award.
Ashworth received the award for this oversight of Kaua‘i Lagoons renovation and clubhouse facility. Ashworth has been heavily involved in the Kaua‘i junior golf program, mentors several PGA apprentices, is the Aloha Section PGA secretary and led his team at Kaua‘i Lagoons to raise the most funds out of all the courses for Patriot Golf Day.
Castillo received the Bill Strausbaugh award for his work at the Princeville Makai Course.
That award is given to the professional who demonstrates a record of service to the section, leadership abilities and is involved in civic and local charitable causes.
Two young amateurs recognized had to come through the Wailua Golf Course to come out on top. University of San Diego freshman Alex Ching won his first prep boys individual golf title last year at Wailua and was presented with the Amateur Golfer of the Year award and the Outstanding Boys Golfer of the Year award.
Moanalua’s Kristina Merkle also received two awards. Merkle won her individual golf championship title at Wailua and with her many top finishes last year earned her the 15 to 18 Girls Player of the Year award and the Outstanding Girls Golfer of the Year.
