KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a’s Cody Abigania finished with a game-high 14 points, but Waimea’s Malcolm Carter came off the bench and poured in a dozen fourth period points to lead Waimea to a come-from-behind 45-44 edge last night.
Chasing a 23-21 halftime deficit, Kapa‘a surged forward as Kekoa Prem generated two straight turnovers and on the pass to Thomas Gausepohl, Kapa‘a went up 29-21 in the third quarter.
Carter took the floor late in the third period, and seven unanswered points in the fourth to tie the contest 39-39 at the 2:12 mark. He followed that with the front end of a charity pair for the 40-39 Menehune bulge and sealed the deal on a technical pair with 21 ticks remaining on the clock.
Prem nailed a bomb from outside the three-point arc at the buzzer in a losing effort.
Following Abigania, Prem finished with a dozen points, tying Carter’s dozen, followed by Gausepohl at eight points.
Xavier Guirao followed Carter with 10 points for Waimea with Sean Inouye adding eight points in the win.
“As far as we’re concerned, we told the boys we lost two games,” said Waimea coach Neal Pigao following the win. “We have another game to go, and we’re taking it game by game.”
A Kapa‘a win would have given the Warriors a 3-0 record with one game remaining. With the loss, Kapa‘a is 2-1.
Varsity girls: Kapa‘a 39, Waimea 33
Mai’lika Napoleon finished with a game-high 15 points to lead the Kapa‘a women to a 39-33 edge over the Menehune wahine in a match where the Kapa‘a defense allowed Waimea just one field goal in the first half.
But a 24-40 showing on the free throw line by Kapa‘a shooters kept the game exciting as Waimea finished 13-32 at the charity stripe.
Following Napoleon, Leina‘ala McCabe finished with nine points, including a trey and a field goal to ice the win a the 21-second mark. Leihua McCabe followed with six points.
Erin Connelly topped the Waimea effort with eight points (0-2 free throw), followed by Kori Sakamoto coming off the bench for seven points including a trey (4-4 free throw). Keirra Barda followed with six points (4-8 free throw) and Jayme Jacinto was 5-10 at the charity stripe.
Junior varsity: Waimea 44, Kapa‘a 38
Cheyanne Duarte and Searra Kaohi each netted 11 points to lead the Waimea JV girls to a 44-38 win over Kapa‘a who got a game-high 15 points from Mahea Hanie-Grace.
Junior varsity boys: Waimea 35, Kapa‘a 28
Waimea also handed the Kapa‘a JV boys a 35-28 loss, but game statistics were not available at press time.
Waimea hosts Kaua‘i, Tuesday night with the JV boys tipping off starting at 5:30 p.m.
