KULA, Maui — Mike Moynahan may be one of the world’s best clubmakers.
The owner of Kama‘aina Clubmakers in Upcountry Maui was recently named to the 2006-2007 Top Ten Worldwide Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association.
This is Moynahan’s third straight year as the GCA’s Hawai‘i Clubmaker of the Year.
Hundreds of nominations from around the world pour into the GCA for the prestigious award, judged by a panel consisting of several GCA officials and golf clubmaking experts.
This year, GCA selected winners from each state in the United States, each province from Canada and each country that exemplifies the overall best qualities of golf club repair, club-fitting and community work.
“All of the 2006-2007 GCA award winners have received what many consider to be some of the clubmaking industry’s highest honors,” Golfsmith R&D vice president Jeff Sheets said in a release. “This award recognizes Moynahan’s ability, integrity and professionalism.”
Moynahan has been in the clubmaking business for more than 10 years. At his shop in Kula, Moynahan custom builds and fits clubs for any golfer, professional or novice.
“You don’t buy a $1,000 suit without having it tailored,” Moynahan said.
Custom grinding of irons and wedges is another service he added this year.

Emmitt Smith wins “Dancing with the Stars”

NEW YORK — Emmitt Smith, three-time Super Bowl champion, was named the winner of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” Wednesday night.
The NFL’s all-time leading rusher beat out actor Mario Lopez.
The hunky, dimpled Lopez was generally regarded as the series most dynamic celebrity dancer, but the public’s vote, the deciding factor after the contestants had tied in the judges’ tally at Tuesday’s final dance-off, brought Smith the victory.
“It is awesome! It is awesome!” declared Smith, after hugging his professional dance partner, Cheryl Burke. “We came a long way, we really have.”
Smith had kind words for Lopez, who was gracious in his defeat. He called the former “Saved by the Bell” star a “true gentleman” and said he and partner Karina Smirnoff “raised the bar” during the competition.
Smith and Burke wowed judges on Tuesday with a spirited samba, to the tune of Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke.”
“What’s so great about you is you are the everyday man who became a dancer in our eyes in the past 10 weeks,” judge Carrie Anna Inaba told Smith, who’s been dubbed “The Big Easy” for his laid-back elegance and charm.
