LIHU‘E — The kids love it, the parents can’t wait for it to happen, and the instructors love the annual visit to a place a lot nicer than where they’re from.
So what’s wrong with the Fourth Annual Sports Camp at Isenberg Park?
Well, absolutely nothing!
In fact, if you ask Pastor Jed Young, it’s just a win-win situation.
This year’s theme is “Breaking Free” and most of the instructors, who hail from California, really enjoy the atmosphere.
The group travels throughout the country, holding similar camps, with the hopes of teaching youths about sports and religion.
“A lot of the staff are missionaries and they really relate well to the kids,” Young said.
The activites include cheerleading, soccer, and basketball, woven carefully with skits and daily bible times.
The camp started on Monday and will end on Friday at 6 p.m.
The group of youngsters range in age from 6-12 and seemed eager to learn from the instructors.
“We have two goals for this camp. One is to get churches together and the other is to provide a safe environment for the kids,” Young noted.
The churches participating in the event are Lihu‘e Missionary, Ohana Christian Fellowship, Lihu‘e Baptist, and Kalaheo Missionary.
“This is the fourth year and we’d like to continue this every year, but we’d like to involve the westside too, so we’ll work on that,” Young said.
And the group of over 100 individuals were also treated to nice weather — at least for the first two days.
