Fastest swimmer on Kaua‘i to be crowned
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
If you think you’re a fast swimmer, particularly in a 50 freestyle format, then mark your calendar for August 6-7, as Mokihana Aquatics’ fun meet added a new and exciting event called, “Dash For Cash.”
“I know there are many great swimmers on Kaua‘i and even former state champions who could still win this event,” Mokihana Aquatics’ Orlando Anaya said.
The annual fun meet at Kaua‘i High School’s pool hosts over 200 youths from around the state and even some swimmers from as far as Washington, California, and Texas.
The “Dash For Cash” contest is open to anyone and there’s a $10 entry fee, which will go towards the $500 pot, that will be shared among the top three winners.
For more information, contact Orlando Anaya at 821-0587 or look out for flyers around the island with more details.
Waimea High School fundraiser
If you haven’t tried the famous “Bunga’s Chicken,” well here’s your chance to kill two birds with one stone.
Waimea High School’s athletic department, in conjunction with Wal-Mart’s 10-year anniversary, will showcase a fundraiser benefiting the Menehune athletic program on August 6 at Wal-Mart.
It’s $6 per half chicken and for tickets, contact athletic director Jon Kobayashi at 338-6804, Menehune head football coach Liko Perreira, or any of his assistants.
Morinaka knocks in an ace
Fred Morinaka of Kailua, O‘ahu (originally of Kaua‘i) made a hole-in-one on Wailua Golf Course’s signature hole #17, (173 yd.) par 3. His ace was accomplished on June 5.
His choice of club was a Taylor Made #7 iron. This was his second ace in his 45 years of golfing. His playing partners were Dwight & Leslie Fujii, Pat Iwasaki and Mike Sukehira. Congratulations Fred!

Sameshima nails an ace
Lihu‘e’s Mel Sameshima has reason to be happy after scoring a hole-in-one at the Mokihana Course of Kaua‘i Lagoons on June 29. Mel used a 5-iron on the 11th hole (184 yards).
J.P. Moss and Kathy Rourke were the lucky witnesses. “I’m just so surprised and shocked — I can’t believe I did it,” Sameshima said.
