Wie fades at men’s Publinx
LEBANON, Ohio — Michelle Wie faded down the stretch again and shot a 6-over 76 on the first day of stroke play at the men’s Amateur Public Links on Monday.
Playing in front of a huge gallery, the 15-year-old from Hawai‘i tied for 84th in the 156-player field. The low 64 scorers over 36 holes of medal play — the second 18 is Tuesday — move on to match play on Wednesday.
Wie, who won the 2003 Women’s Amateur Public Links, is playing in the men’s APL because the winner traditionally gets an invitation to the Masters. She just missed the cut at the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic last week, also finding trouble on the final few holes.
Armstrong surrenders yellow, for now
MULHOUSE, France — Lance Armstrong surrendered the overall lead in the Tour de France to take some pressure off his team.
The six-time defending champion fully intends to wear the yellow jersey again soon.
Germany’s Jens Voigt — not a contender to win in Paris — took the jersey by finishing three minutes ahead of Armstrong in the ninth stage Sunday.
Denmark’s Mickael Rasmussen won the stage with a gutsy solo ride. He was first over the six climbs, covering the 106.3-mile route from Gerardmer to Mulhouse in eastern France in 4 hours, 8 minutes, 20 seconds.
Voigt finished 3:04 later, just behind France’s Christophe Moreau. Armstrong, who had worn yellow for five days, finished in 28th place, crossing the line comfortably in a pack with his main rivals — including 1997 champion Jan Ullrich, who crashed during a descent and bruised his ribs.
