The weather was good this time and the Kapa‘a girls and Kula boys took full advantage of the great conditions at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
The Warrior girls captalized in the doubles matches, by winning all three contests, which gave them the 3-2 win.
However, Kula swept the singles matches, as Ariel Carlson defeated Shawna Tamayose, 6-4, 7-5.
In the second singles competition, Kula’s Danielle Hoen fought off a tough challenge from Julie Yoshida, 6-4, 7-5.
Kapa‘a lost just four points in the three doubles matches.
Tasha Haraguchi and Kelli Okamoto cruised past Kula’s Nora Robertson and Kristen Steiner, 6-1, 6-1 and Christine Lane teamed up with Stephanie Kawamura for the 6-0, 6-1 win over Anna Noveslova and Summer Ryll.
Kapa‘a’s Courtney Kerlin and Carrie Esaki almost blanked Chloe Garret and Chantay Sherrer in third doubles action, 6-0, 6-1.
In an exhibition contest, Lauren Esaki and Mariko Asano of Kapa‘a nailed down the 8-1 win over Ryll and Noveslova.
Kula boys on fire
After a big upset win over the Kaua‘i High School boys’ squad, which knocked them from the unbeaten ranks, Kula scorched Kapa‘a, 5-0 and continued its torrid pace to-wards the qualifying matches. Alex Latif and Kai Anderson were victorious in the singles contests. Latif defeated Kia Tom, 6-1, 6-3 and Anderson flowed past Taylor Alfiler, 6-2, 6-1.
Kula’s Kyle Barrett and Kiibo Smith won in straight sets over Kapa‘a’s Cory Napolean and Bryson Toda, 6-1, 6-3. In the best match of the afternoon, Kula’s Sergei Wright and Dylan Latif withstood a tough challenge from Chris Ramelb and Danny Rodrick, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
Kapa‘a’s Travis Wakayama and Kila Youn had a rough time at first with Kula’s Darien Parrish and Matt Vinsko, but in the end the Warrior duo prevailed, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Island School and Kula School battle at the Kiahuna Courts at 12 p.m. this Saturday and Kapa‘a faces off against Kaua‘i at 3 p.m. at Kiahuna.
