Clash over labeling of Hawai‘i mac nut products results in split legislation

House Bill 2278, which was passed by Hawai‘i lawmakers on May 1, 2024, set out to establish truth in labeling for Hawai‘i-grown macadamia products but some foods were excluded. Flavored, plain roasted and raw macadamia nuts, which are seen above, are covered under the bill while products like chocolate-covered mac nuts are not.

HONOLULU — One of the hardest issues the state Legislature took on this year was to bring truth in labeling to packages featuring one of Hawai‘i’s most renowned and high-value crops.
