With the end of the 2004 season in sight, the Hawai‘i women’s cross country team is looking for a strong finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championship, Saturday, Oct. 30, in Ruston, La. Three top four finishes in their last three meets gives the Rainbow Wahine a much needed boost as they take aim at their first-ever WAC title. Also traveling is Kapa‘a’s Sharlene Carillo. The sophomore, who was Kapa‘a High School standout has been doing well all season long.
Hawai‘i will be participating in the 5K women’s race, along with the other member schools of the WAC, including event host Louisiana Tech. In last year’s event, hosted by San Jose State, the Hawai`i finished in eighth place, with 186 points, paced by Dana Buchanan’s 22nd place showing.
Leading the way for the Rainbow Wahine are the trio of Buchanan, Chantelle Laan and Sabrina Reeve, who have posted the top time for Hawai`i a combined six times out of nine events in 2004. Sophomores Buchanan and Laan own the Rainbow Wahine’s top two times in 5K races this season, while freshman sensation Reeve holds the top time in both the 4K and 6K distances.
Danielle Binns, Dana Buchanan, Sharlene Carillo, Chantelle Laan, Sabrina Reeve, Sheena Thain, Kelly Young, Carmyn James (head coach), Andy McInnis (asst. coach) Hawai‘i returned home to capture their second victory of the year in the Coed-Sprint Invitational 4K, Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. Freshman Sabrina Reeve continued her strong debut season finishing second overall with a time of 14:34. It was the second consecutive event Reeve posted the Rainbow Wahine’s top finishing time. Overall, Hawai‘i finished the event with 21 points, with no qualifying score lower than seventh place.
Hawai‘i head coach Carmyn James enters her fifth season at the helm of the women’s cross country and track and field programs. Under her tutelage, two runners qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, including Cheryl Smith’s first place finish at the 2001 WAC Championships.
