Rice Shopping Center champ wins again
Robert Smith, the winner of the Second Annual Rice Shopping Center West Region Open held two weeks ago at Lihu’e Bowling Center, won again this week.
The California resident completed the Hawai’i sweep with a dominating win at the 23rd Annual BOSS Hawai’i Open at Naval Station Bowling Center on Oahu.
Though his win in Lihu’e was narrow, Smith was never challenged on Oahu. He won by over 130 pins and pushed his lead to over 200 pins on various occasions throughout the two-day event. Smith pocketed $2,100 for his effort, to go with the $2,000 he won in Lihu’e.
Though not in the top 16, Kaua’i’s Darryl Izumo was the alternate on the final day. He cashed in for $300 for his two-day effort. Izumo won the seventh annual Oahu event in 1984.
Lihu’e’s Vance Akiyama finished 41st in the competition.
