Can anyone stop the Rookies?
The five other teams in the Kaua’i Senior Citizen Softball League couldn’t do so at any time in the first round, as the Rookies skated to a 9-0 record. The teams latest win came at the hands of East Kaua’i, 11-6, Saturday at Isenberg Field.
Archie Fontanilla picked up his eighth win for the Rookies. Wally Sonoda is responsible for the other victory. East Kaua’i’s Walter Silva suffered the loss.
For the Rookies (9-0), Sonoda had a home run on two hits, and Hank Nishikawa recorded a 3-for-4 day at the plate. East Kaua’i (5-4) players with two hits included Walter Silva, Wayne Soma and John Garcia.
In other action Saturday, West Kaua’i (5-4) shelled host Kawaihau 16-4. Frank Bukoski worked the mound for West Kaua’i, picking up his second win. He also banged a solo home run and was 4-for-4 at the plate. JR Rivera banged a grand slam on two hits and had six RBI on the day. Danny Manusaso hit a homer on three hits.
Kawaihau’s Teddy Daligdig got the loss. Don Boro was the only Kawaihau (1-8) player to pair hits, one was a solo home run.
In the day’s final game, the Lihu’e A’s (6-3) came up with three runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 7-6 win over K-Makules (1-8). Buster Matsumura picked up his third win. Dado Paiste suffered the loss.
Dwight Fujii led the A’s with three hits, while Roy Running, Shige Oshiro and Tomo Hirankaka all paired hits. K-Makules’ Guy Ruiz was 2-for-2 at the plate. John Tabanair also came up with two hits.
