POIPU — The Shops at Kukuiula is hosting the free Garden Island Film Festival Wednesday and Saturday from 6:15 to 9:30 p.m.
Both evenings will start with a hula performance by Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala at 6:15 p.m. followed by a screening of “Keahualaka, A Door to Hawaiian Spirituality” at 6:30 p.m., or within 15 minutes of sunset.
In this 45-minute documentary, Roselle Keliihonipua Bailey recounts the history of the work done to restore Keahualaka and Ka Ulu o Paoa, as well as the importance of this Kauai North Shore site to the hula world.
“Keahualaka” includes archival photographs and segments of video footage filmed on site during workdays and ceremonial events of hula when the ancient hula platform was cleared and rededicated some decades ago.
Each evening will conclude with a special feature film.
Wednesday will feature “Chasing Mavericks,” a movie chronicling the life of 15-year-old surfing phenomenon Jay Moriarty and his quest to survive the mythic Mavericks surf break with the help of local legend Frosty Hesson.
On Saturday the documentary “Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton” will be shown.
This film illustrates the remarkable story of an American icon who changed the sport of big wave surfing forever by offering an intimate, uncompromising look at riding big waves and the price an athlete pays for greatness.
