PUHI — The first tournament of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling season took place Saturday at Island School.
Twenty-two boys and 17 girls representing all four KIF schools competed in 47 matches across 14 brackets.
“The wrestling was so vastly improved from our last Kauai meet six weeks ago,” said Kauai coach Paul Shindell. “These kids keep learning and improving. I was so excited to see Adrianne Quetula and Janessa Llego-Finney get their first ever wrestling wins. Coby Lawrence and Sarai Valdez looked better than ever and went undefeated today.”
Many of the familiar faces were back on the mat. Seniors and four-year KIF wrestlers Braeden Jensen of Kapaa and Corey Agena of Waimea dominated their respective brackets.
Many new faces, including freshmen Coby Lawrence of Kauai and Ashlyn Agena of Waimea, wrestled well, too.
“We are excited for the KIF season. It looks like there are going to be a lot of good match ups this season,” said Kapaa coach Jess Jensen. “During the first tournament, our kids performed well. But as always, you leave seeing things to work on for next week. We are looking forward to tournament No. 2 at Kapaa next week.”
Waimea coach CJ Threat added: “We had a good day wrestling. Very proud of our team. We still have plenty of thing to work on. But compared to November, we have made steadily made improvements.”
