The Kapa’a Warriors (0-0-1) and Kaua’i Red Raider (1-0-1) girl’s soccer showdown ended in a 2-2 stalemate last night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kapa’a came out bruising in the first period, knocking Kaua’i’s primary goalie out of the game and later grounding the Red Raider back-up (although she would remain in the game).
But the Red Raiders wouldn’t be intimidated, and the right-corner header by Amber Santos proved Kaua’i was not going to lay low while the Warriors kept pounding up the field.
The 2000 champion Warriors weren’t going to let the speedy Red Raider forwards get to them.
Moments after the initial score, Warrior Nichol Kunicka shot a similar header into the top-right corner of the net–this one via a corner kick from Jackie Hutlger.
The score was tied heading into the second half, 1-1.
Kaua’i took over in the second.
Holly Iloretta got a fortunate breakaway twenty feet from center-net and chipped a pretty floater over the Kapa’a goaltender to give the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead.
But Kapa’a refused to lose.
Forward Jasmine Stevenson sent a dagger pass to Hutlger three-quarters through the second period, who then knocked in a tying left-corner shot. The kick initially deflected off the Red Raider goalie but Hutlger would reclaim possession and send it through the net for the tying score.
The game ended in a stalemate, 2-2.
Kapa’a 1, Kaua’i 0 (boys)
Kapa’a (1-0) knocked in a late second period goal to get the edge over the Kaua’i Red Raiders (1-1) 1-0 last night at Vidinha Stadium.
There was no scoring in the first period, but there was plenty of hard-knock action brewing on the soccer field.
Kapa’a pounded Kaua’i throughout, committing eight fouls in the first period and obtaining four yellow cards in the game.
The contest remained scoreless until 13 minutes left in the second period, when Gram Kovarik broke loose on the right wing and smacked a potential one-timer down the center of the box. Sure enough, Isaiah Sarsona was there to smack in the lone score of the game and put the Warriors on top of the KIF standings.
