Attendance looked as if it was going to be Anahola’s Achilles heel, Sunday morning.
The Hui had only eight players lined up against the full eleven from the Westside. The Westside was the first to score, when Eli Emery booted a ball thrown in from the sidelines from one of his teammates.
Daniel Garven made a huge goal line save, blocking a header that had passed the Westside goalie, protecting the Afterburners lead. The tides changed however by the second half, as Hui players continued to trickle in and take the field. Dan Priggie tied the game up, with a nice one time shot. Then Mike Brechett gave Anahola the go ahead goal, heading in a deflected shot from the right side. Kaiana Oliver extended their lead to 3-1, finishing a pass from Priggie.
The Afterburners made one final comeback push, bringing the score within one, as Eli Emery scores again off a defensive deflection. But Hanapa Hui prevailed, winning their opening game, 3-2.
Hanalei Soccer Club 2, Wailua Kryptonite 2
The Wailua Kryptonite are a new team in the league this year but have already started a fierce rivalry with the Hanalei S.C.
This first meeting of the season proved that both teams are going to play hard and rough against each other.
The referees had to distribute more colored cards than Hallmark.
Hanalei got its first goal from Devin Herlihy in the 31st minute, who tapped in a cross that had gone through the middle of the defense.
But it wasn’t long before the Kapaa Paint Kryptonite evened it up when Eddie Adams got open for a one time goal , because two Hanalei defenders collided, taking each other out of the play. Hanalei’s Anthony Tangelderfinally scored on one of his numerous breakaways, beating the keeper one on one in the 61st minute. Kapaa forward, Kaena Mayor tied it up again in the 69th minute with a solid shot. With the tension and emotions heightening, two of the leagues biggest instigators, Juan Perez, and Kit Owen, were red carded for an altercation at midfield. Both players were thrown out of the game and suspended for the following game, and the teams finished out the game, ten apiece. The game ended in a tie, 2-2, making this rivalry even greater for the next meeting.
