LIHU‘E — Following efforts to play a makeup girls basketball game, Waimea High School swept the junior varsity contest, 33-15, and the varsity wahine walked off with a 59-53 over Kaua‘i High School on Friday night during Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation games.

Playing on the new courts at the Kaua‘i High School gym, the Menehune JV roped its victory behind the high point of Wailana Tanigawa-Christian, who bucketed 29 points, including a singular 3-ball.
La‘akea Kauwe finished with 18 points, including a pair of treys, and Jaianna Locquiao had a single trey in her 10-point contribution.
Kaua‘i JV’s Taylor Duran dropped all her five marks, including a long distance bomb in the third frame, when the JV Red Raiders had its most productive frame with eight points. Lily Corpuz added four points in the effort.
Menehune guard Hailey Mata ended with 19 points, including three from outside the arc. Alyssa Gummerus popped a trey toward her game-total 15 points to lead the varsity Menehune to the wine over the varsity Red Raiders where a surge of late opening period marks had Waimea squeezing out a 20-17 margin at the buzzer.
The Menehune surged to a 35-26 lead at the half.
The Red Raiders came out of the locker rooms to outscore Waimea, 16-15 in the third frame and 11-9 in the final period before time ran out on the comeback effort.
Cheyley Jacobs topped the Raiders’ effort with 14 points, including a pair of 3-balls, followed by Jazlyn Corpuz and Grace Alana each adding nine points with Alana’s game total dropping in the second half.
The KIF launches the second round on Monday, when the Kapa‘a girls visit Kaua‘i at the Raiders’ new gym. The JV contest tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest about 25 minutes after the JV game.
