LIHU‘E — Waimea High School suffered its second straight loss, 51-48, and Kapa‘a High School slipped by Kaua‘i High School, 51-45, in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games at Island School and Kaua‘i High School.
The Voyagers pulled out to a 17-8 lead following the opening frame, and held on to a 25-21 lead at the break despite Waimea outgunning the Voyagers, 13-8 in the second quarter.
The Menehune held on in the third quarter to take a 34-33 edge following three quarters of play.
Island School came back in the final stanza to outperform the Menehune 19-14.
On the Kaua‘i High floor, the Red Raiders looked at a 10-point hole at the break before coming back with a 14-8 third quarter to pull to within four points, 31-35, after three quarters of play.
In the final stanza, Kaua‘i pulled to within a digit after Isaac Mirey bucketed in traffic, 41-40, with a little more than two minutes remaining in the contest. Kapa‘a surged forward on buckets by Tristen Scully and Reimel Camacho and with just 3.2 seconds showing, Keaka Kauhane dropped the opener of a charity pair to lock up the win.
Kauhane tallied 10 points in the win, followed by Austin Green with 13 points, including one from outside the 3-point arc. Scully ended with 11 points, including a trio of treys. Camacho finished with eight marks, including a perfect four-for-four showing at the foul line in the fourth stanza.
Mirey finished with 15 points for the Raiders, including a third quarter 3-ball. He was followed by Joshua Rego adding 13 points, including a fourth quarter trey that triggered strong support from the home crowd. Cameron Holt-Ho finished with 10 points.
On the Voyagers floor, Garrett Hadley topped the Island School shooting with 20 points, including a trio of treys. Lucas Summerhays followed with 13 second-half points, including a 3-ball. Matthew Dobashi followed with a dozen points, including one 3-ball.
Kelani Lewis topped the Menehune’s effort on 13 points, including one 3-ball. Lindcey Constantino finished with 12 points, including a 3-ball.
On the junior varsity floor, Waimea claimed a 57-51 win over Island School behind 14 points from Kaleb Parraga and 11 points each from Edison Medina and Efren Taylan Jr.
Island School got 15 points each from Jonathan Primeaux and Piko Vaughn.
Over at the Kaua‘i High School gymnasium, Kapa‘a JV took a 59-42 win over Kaua‘i behind 33 points bucketed by Ceejay Jenkins, including a pair of treys. Siotame Malafu added 14 points.
Edgar Porter topped the Red Raiders effort on 20 points.
Waimea makes the trip to Bernice Hundley Gym on Tuesday to face Kapa‘a, who is currently undefeated in the KIF first round. Kaua‘i High School will host Island School at its new gymnasium.
The JV contests at both sites tip off from 5:30 p.m. with the varsity games to follow.
