LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School picked up its second varsity win, and Kaua‘i High School was fueled by Joshua Rego for the Red Raiders’ first win in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea and Wilcox Gymnasium at Island School.
Kapa‘a took a 49-44 win over Waimea after breaking away from a 19-19 halftime stalemate. Waimea squeezed out a three-point edge after out shooting the Warriors 15-12 in the third stanza.
However, the Warriors came back in the final frame to out score the Menehune 18-10 in the fourth quarter. Warrior Keaka Kauhane picked up high point honors for Kapa‘a with a game-high 17 points, including a 3-ball and going four-for-four at the charity stripe.
Reimel Camacho pitched in 13 points. Austin Green poured in nine marks.
Waimea’s effort was led by Kelani Lewis, who finished with 12 points, including a trey. Lindsey Constantino added 11 points, including a long distance bomb. Mar Ruiz finished with eight marks and Brayden Mira added five points.
With the contest knotted 13-13 following the first stanza at the home of the Island School Voyagers, Kaua‘i High School pulled away when Rego erupted for 14 points, including launching a 3-ball, to lead the Red Raiders to a 25-11 quarter. Voyagers Rocco Sand and Lucas Summerhays contributed four points each in the quarter.
Island School’s Summerhays finished as the top scoring player with 18 points in the 70-55 loss where Island School suffered three players fouling out leaving just four players holding the fort against the Red Raiders.
The shortage never hurt the Voyagers who managed to outgun Kaua‘i, 19-15 in the final frame, Summerhays and Garrett Hadley each netted four marks in that frame, where Orion Magaoay peeled off three treys for nine points.
Rego marked a game-high 25 points, including four three-balls, to lead the Red Raiders. Isaac Mirey and Christian Vito each finished with eight points, Mirey marking a trey, and netting a pair of buckets in the fourth quarter before being subbed out.
Reese Jenkins also finished with eight points, including a trey. Cameron Holt-Ho added seven marks.
Garrett Hadley finished with 12 points for the Voyagers. Magaoay ended with 10 points, including the trio of three-balls in the final frame.
On the JV courts, Kaua‘i JV finished with a 53-30 win over the JV Voyagers, behind 15 points from Edgar Porter, including three from outside the 3-point arc that triggered enthusiastic cheering from the varsity squad. Nicholas Gandeza added 11 points, including a three-ball.
Jonathan Primeaux had the hot hand for the Voyagers JV, finishing with 14 points. Piko Vaughn added 11 points.
Island School next makes the trip to face Kapa‘a on Thursday, when the team travels to Bernice Hundley Gym. Waimea will come over the bridge to the new Kaua‘i High School gymnasium to face the Red Raiders.
The JV games at both sites tip off starting at 5:30 p.m. The varsity contests follow the completion of the JV games.
