‘ELE‘ELE — Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel extinguished a brush fire that broke out in ‘Ele‘ele on Saturday and grew to envelop 25 acres.
Although most of the fire was extinguished, crews were on the scene Sunday to put out flare-ups and hot spots.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened.
Personnel with the Hanapepe fire station, rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station,the county emergency helicopter and battalion chief and the area’s landowners responded to the incident.
According to a preliminary report, at approximately 4:15 p.m. Saturday, KFD personnel were dispatched to a brush fire near a cemetery by Glass Beach.
Arriving firefighters discovered an area of brush 30 feet by 30 feet on fire, and controlled the west perimeter and spot fires. Because of the fire’s proximity and terrain, crews could not reach the head of the fire.
Firefighters assisted along a dirt road near the Kaua‘i Coffee Company fields. Crews initially focused their attention near the solar panels by the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative Port Allen facilities. Kaua‘i Coffee management and crews with Alexander &Baldwin were also on scene with a front loader and tanker to assist.
Air 1 and Rescue 3 personnel shifted their attention near the Camp 1 area until Air 1 left due to darkness. Crews continued putting out hot spots and monitored the area.
Hanapepe firefighters were in the area Sunday to extinguish additional flare-ups and hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
