Florefin Mande
Florefin Shirley Mande of Hanamaulu died at Garden Isle Health Care on Jan. 26, 2012, at the age of 76. She was born in Wahiawa, O‘ahu, on Nov. 26, 1935, and retired as an assistant housekeeper with The Westin Kaua‘i and was also a well-known seamstress and bowler.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ernest Mande, daughter, Kathlyn Mande; siblings, Jerry (Violet) Fernandez, Suzanna (Irenio) Salvacion and Ben Castillo.
She is survived by her husband, William Mande Sr.; sons, Kalena Glenford Mande, William (Cindy) Mande Jr.; daughter, Melory (Napuanani) Mande-Oliver; sisters, Angie (Luis) Flores; brothers, Sonny (Patricia) Ventura, Edward (Nickie) Tarape; sister-in-law, Silvia Castillo; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Catherine Church with visitation from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Cremation to follow.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Mande family with arrangements.
Carla Briggs
Carla Kuulei Briggs of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, passed away on Jan. 26, 2012, at her home at the age of 59. She was born on March 1, 1952, on O‘ahu. She was a bank teller.
She is survived by her two daughters, Heather Conner of Kapa‘a and Jennifer Briggs of Kapa‘a; mother, Maxine Teixeira of Kapa‘a; brother, Richard (Fradelle) Teixeira of Kilauea; sister, Sharon Teixeira of Kapa‘a, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m,. where memorial services will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Toshie Shimizu
Toshie H. Shimizu of Wailua, Kaua‘i, died on Jan. 5, 2012, at home at the age of 89. She was born on Sept. 25, 1922, in Hanapepe, Kaua‘i. She was a housewife.
She is survived by her son, Karl Shimizu of Thailand; daughters, Gloria Shimizu of Kapa‘a and Pearl Shimizu of Kapa‘a; brother, Tada Ted Hashimoto of Hanapepe; sister-in-law, Chiyoko Hashimoto of Kekaha, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Kapa‘a Hongwanji Mission; service at 4 p.m. Casual attire. Flowers omitted.

Ellen Tateishi
Ellen “ET” Eiko Tateishi of Hilo, Hawai‘i, died on Jan. 27, 2012, at Hilo Medical Center at the age of 50. She was born on Aug. 7, 1961, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. She was a retired office assistant at the Records and Internal Data Management Office at Hawa‘ii Community College.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd Yoshimoto of Hilo, Hawai‘i; mother, Aster Tateishi of Kalaheo, Kauai; sisters, Fay Tateishi of Kalaheo, Kauai; Diane Kent of Hilo, Hawai‘i; Toni Uchima of Torrance, Calif., and Laurie Tateishi of Kalaheo, Kaua‘i; three nephews, two nieces, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, 398 Kilauea Ave. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and no flowers.

John Matsuda
John Albert Sei Matsuda of Honolulu died on Jan. 8, 2012, at the age of 66. He was born in Waimea, Kaua‘i, and was a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class.
He is survived by two sons, Jadd Seichi Matsuda of Mililani and Jess Yoichi Matsuda of Las Vegas; three grandchildren; mother, Haruno Matsuda of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i; two sisters, Margaret (Mamo) Mochizuki of Kailua, O‘ahu and Sharon Yamagata of Hanapepe Heights, Kaua‘i.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, with visitation from 1 p.m. and funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Committal Service and inurnment at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at Hawa‘ii State Veterans Cemetery. No flowers, and casual attire is suggested.
