LIHU‘E — Shootouts settled three of the four games played at the Will Veech Inter-regional playoffs at the North Vidinha fields.
Tuesday, the Kilauea Angry Birds eliminated the Hanapepe Galaxy, 7-1, the only game settled in regulation play during the American Youth Soccer Organization tournament, the vanquished Galaxy representing AYSO, Region 940 Boys 12 Under.
In the neighboring field, Koloa got past Kapa‘a in a shootout for the Under 14 Girls division.
Wednesday, Shayna Shigematsu netted two goals for the Lihu‘e Kaua‘i Girls in the Under 12 Girls division, but the effort fell short as the Thrillers came back in the second half to answer with two goals from April Barnes to send the match to shootout where Thrillers’ goalkeeper Emma Buratti did a fine job keeping the Lihu‘e kicks out of the goal, aided in part by the chilly winds blowing out of the northeast.
In the neighboring field, the Westside created a problem for Jane Garma, the coach’s wife, after edging the North Shore Boys, 1-0 in shootout.
“I’ve already got plans,” Jane said, making her way across the field after the Westside blueshirts (covered by red vests) won the shootout. “There’s the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cheer competition.”
The Will Veech tournament continues Friday and Saturday at the North Vidinha fields and the Vidinha Stadium.
