The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation announced its 2008-09 spring sports All-Stars, as well as coaches and players of the year Wednesday.
In baseball, Kaua‘i High School senior Jordan Leanio was named player of the year. Leanio and Kaua‘i made it all the way to the HHSAA Championship before losing a heartbreaking 3-2 game to Maryknoll.
Other Red Raiders honored as All-Stars were freshman pitcher Jensen Koga, junior catcher Lanan Rice-Kashima, senior second-baseman Dayne Murata, senior shortstop Kalen Wakumoto, senior outfielder Rysan Sakamoto and senior outfielder Dustin Prem.
Waimea’s senior first-baseman Michael Acoba, senior third-baseman Robert Perreira, junior outfielder Paul Correa and senior utility player Isaa Horner were also honorees.
Red Raiders coach Hank Ibia was named coach of the year.
The boys golf All-Star team was dominated by Kaua‘i as five of the six players are Red Raiders. Senior Cory Oride, senior Wiley Yoshioka, senior Jordan Oda, senior Kyle Furusho and junior Levi Miyashiro all made the squad. Kapa‘a’s Sean Mamaclay, a junior, rounded out the team.
Oride’s sister, Kelli, a Kaua‘i sophomore who took second place in the HHSAA David Ishii Girls Golf Championship last week, made the girls All-Star team. She is joined by Kaua‘i senior Rae-Lyn Morikawa, Kapa‘a senior Gabrielle Saiki and Waimea’s duo of junior Melissa Kagawa and senior Pualani Ragasa.
In girls softball, Kaua‘i and Waimea, both currently competing in the HHSAA Championship tournament in Honolulu, dominated the selections.
Kaua‘i senior pitcher Wailana Borrero was named player of the year, as well as an All-Star. Teammates joining her are senior first-baseman Jori Jasper, senior shortstop Jessica Iwata, senior outfielder Alyssa Carvalho and senior outfielder Shereen Doi.
Waimea has four All-Stars. Freshman catcher Kawehi Ephan, freshman second-baseman Krysta Kali, junior third-baseman MarieBeth Watanabe and senior outfielder Ariel Mizumoto made the cut.
Waimea’s Teddy Perreira was honored as coach of the year.
Tennis All-Stars in girls singles are Kaua‘i sophomore Sarah Kukino and freshman Shay Orial, as well as Kapa‘a seniors Lyndsey Tom and Kirsten McCracken.
In boys singles, Kapa‘a senior Dustin Valdez and sophomore Chas Okamoto are joined by Island sophomore Sam Dunham and Kaua‘i senior Lanning Henriques.
Girls doubles team All-Stars are Waimea senior Tiffany Lum and junior Jade Cano, Island senior Juli Blachoviak and sophomore Madison Duarte, Kapa‘a senior Cherine Ito and junior Makena McClusky and Kaua‘i freshman Jennifer Grady and sophomore Jasmine Ikeda.
Boys doubles team All-Stars are made up by Waimea seniors Harold Shimono Jr. and Darrel Nonaka, Island sophomore Logan Domingo and freshman Jeremy Randolph-Flagg, Kaua‘i freshman Matthew Kanna and junior Christopher Flynn and Waimea senior Michael Haack and sophomore Joshua Ponting.
In boys volleyball, KIF champs Waimea has four of the seven All-Stars. Senior outside hitter Quinn Gonsalves, junior outside hitter David Kaohelauli‘i, senior middle blocker Brenden Cristobal and senior setter Jared Matsumoto were all honorees, led by Matsumoto’s player of the year selection.
Kaua‘i senior outside hitter Kaleo Cummings, Kapa‘a’s junior middle blocker Sean Shigematsu and Kapa‘a’s senior libero John Paul Delos Santos rounded out the team.
Tony Magaoay, Waimea’s head coach, was selected coach of the year.
In girls track and field, Kaua‘i and Waimea made up the entire All-Star team. Kaua‘i’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of senior Kathleen Cadiente, sophomore Kelsey Cadiente, freshman Reanna Javinar and senior Jessica Iwata was selected. Kathleen Cadiente was also named an All-Star in the 100-meter dash and the long jump. Kelsey Cadiente was an All-Star in the 200-meter dash. Javinar was additionally honored in the triple jump.
Waimea’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of sophomore Charleen Miguel, sophomore Jayme Jacinto, junior Natasha Abadilla and senior Caralyn Broyles was selected. Jacinto was also chosen for her prowess in the 100 and 300-meter hurdle events. Abadilla was the top choice in the 400-meter run and Broyles was clearly the top distance runner in the conference, chosen as an All-Star for the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs.
Kaua‘i seniors Aimee Palaroan and Kayla Werner completed the team, Palaroan for the high jump, Werner for the shot put and discus events.
In boys track and field, Waimea’s 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams took all the honors. The 4 x 100 meter unit is made up of junior Moses Fierro, senior Darrel Nonaka, junior Torrey Santiago and junior Jordon Kitabayashi. Fierro was also the top choice for the 200-meter dash. Nonaka received the nod for the 400-meter run. Santiago was the top performer in the long jump and the triple jump.
The 4 x 400 team is Fierro, Nonaka, Kitabayashi and senior Kalen Kali-Abihai.
Island sophomore Pierce Murphy was selected for all the distance events, the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs. Kaua‘i senior Canaan Bernard was selected for the 100 meter dash. Kaua‘i’s sophomore Darren Acoba was the choice in the 110-meter hurdles and senior Kyle Wong took the honor for the discus.
Kapa‘a senior Joseph Velasco stood out for his efforts in the 300-meter hurdles and senior Semisi Malolo was the choice in the shot put.
