This weekend was the final competition of the 2008-09 Hawaii Surfing Federation Kaua‘i season. The event was held down in Poipu at PK’s beach and turned out to be a great day of surfing.
Miguel Graham, the HSF Kaua‘i Contest Director, said that the event went exceptionally well and capped off a very successful season.
Donating sponsors for the event were Tradewinds Kaua‘i, Jewels by the Sea and Hana Hou Jewels, all located down at the Spouting Horn in Poipu. Graham wanted to thank the YMCA and Mike Wellman Surfboards for their continued support.
“The DLNR office is also outstanding and always there for us,” Graham said. “Also John Martin at County Parks and the Kaua‘i Water Patrol. Without these people, we couldn’t do what we do.”
This was the last contest in order to qualify kids for the Burger King HASA State Championships, which will take place June 4-6 in Waikiki.
Graham, who just took over as the main organizer of the HSF Kaua‘i events, is already stoked about the 2009-10 season, which will begin in September. He is hoping to get even more kids out participating.

Kaua‘i’s own Andy Irons was back in the water this week, participating in the Billabong Pro Teahupoo competition in Tahiti.
Irons, who has been taking a year off from full-time surf competitions, has decided to enter a number of this year’s events. He showed no signs of rustiness as he easily won his first round heat against Brazil’s Jihad Khodr by putting up 14.5 points to Khodr’s 4.77.
Irons will square off with Australia’s Bebe Durbidge
in the next round. The second round has been delayed for a few days as the waves have not been cooperating. Event organizers hoped to continue the event on Wednesday.
Other notable competitors are Kelly Slater, C.J. Hobgood, Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning.
