Following a late start, the Waimea High School boys Freestyle relay teams received seeds at the 2009 Local Motion Swimming & Diving Championships that will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park.
Coached by Jeff Casey, the Menehune men started with just two swimmers following sign-ups, but finished with a strong showing in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championships en route to gaining two berths at the state meet.
The Menehune relay team is seeded No. 21 for the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and No. 20 for the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
Along with the Menehune, Kapa‘a picked up the No. 24 seed in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and Kaua‘i’s Aaron Pigott settled into the No. 13 seed in the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke.
The seedings were released by the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Tuesday afternoon and sets the stage for the two-day state championships where the top five swimmers will receive medals in a field of eight swimmers and teams in the finals.
The Kaua‘i High School girls freestyle relay team got the highest seeding for the KIF girls with a No. 10 seed in the Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and a No. 11 seed in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Kapa‘a’s team is seeded No. 14 with a 1:47.96 performance, a little more than a second off the Kaua‘i pace.
Anya Littlefield, a freshman at Kapa‘a, topped the girls individual events, receiving two No. 11 seeds in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle (2:03.52) and in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle (5:30.87).
Kendra Rask, a Kaua‘i-connected freshman at Punahou, has the No. 9 seed in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle event and the No. 3 seed in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle which she broke out of her No. 3 seed to win the O‘ahu Interscholastic Federation event.
Emma Rausch, a sophomore at Kapa‘a, follows with a pair of No. 13 seeds: the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle (57.54) and the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke (1:04.93).
Melanie Grindle, a junior at Kula Intermediate and High, also picked up two seedings: No. 22 in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle (26.46) and No. 24 in the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke (1:08.39).
Desiree Pia, a senior at Kaua‘i High School, fielded a No. 15 seed in the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly (1:04.60) and No. 22 in the Girls 200 Yard Individual Medley (2:27.40).
Casie Ford, a senior at Kaua‘i High School, got the No. 18 seed in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle (2:07.01) and the No. 20 seed in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle (5:42.15).
Ryann Linthicum, a freshman at Kaua‘i High School, took the No. 16 seed in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle (2:04.32) and the No. 18 seed in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle (5:41.45).
Tania Rames, a senior at Kapa‘a High School, gets the No. 18 seed for the Girls 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:14.63) and Kapa‘a’s Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay team is seeded No. 14.
Noah Murray, a Kaua‘i boy swimming with the Hawai‘i Prepatory Academy on the Big Island, received the No. 3 seed in the Boys 50 Yard Free with his 20.28 performance that earned him the “fastest freestyle swimmer on the Big Island” for two straight years.
Murray is also on the HPA Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team that earned the No. 2 seed with its BIIF record-breaking 1:30.18, and is also on the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team that is seeded No. 3 with its 3:24.90 performance.
