Davone Florence led the Red Raiders with 13 points and four steals, Teila Huni added nine points and 14 rebounds and Kaua‘i High School’s boys basketball team beat Kapa‘a High School 50-45 Wednesday night at the Raiderdome.
It was a game worthy of championship caliber. There was the packed gym, the interleague rivalry, a close matchup, raised testosterone levels and of course, there was the actual importance of the outcome.
Wednesday night’s game pit the boys Round 1 champions of Kapa‘a against the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions of Kaua‘i, and with the win, Kaua‘i (2-0 Round 2, 3-3 KIF) gains the upper hand in Round 2. Kapa‘a drops to 1-1 for Round 2, 4-2 KIF.
If Kaua‘i sweeps through this round, the Raiders will then force a playoff against Kapa‘a for the title at the end of this month.
Not wanting to repeat its overtime loss to Kapa‘a at the end of Round 1, Kaua‘i came out rushing. The Raiders quickly shot up to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. It wasn’t until a breakaway by Kekoa Colipano who then tossed an assist to Duke Pauli, that Kapa‘a got on the board. Kaua‘i closed the quarter at 12-6 and the half at 31-25.
Kaua‘i led the whole game with Kapa‘a getting as close as one point, but trailing by as much as 11.
Kaua‘i’s Kaleo Cummings finished the game with seven points and five rebounds. Scott Taylor added six points.
Despite Pauli’s double-double game, Kapa‘a just couldn’t cut the deficit. Pauli led the Warriors with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kekoa Prem had 11 points, Sean Shigematsu posted seven rebounds and two blocks and Thomas Gausepohl had five rebounds.
Boys junior varsity: Kaua‘i 66, Kapa‘a 33
Kaua‘i’s boys junior varsity team had a runaway victory on Wednesday beating Kapa‘a 66-33. Kaua‘i was led by Willis Batol who finished with 20 points, followed by Bryan Andres who scored eight.
Kapa‘a was led by Adam Clark who had 11 points. Bradley Coloma scored seven.
The next set of boys basketball games will start at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, at the Clem Gomes Gym at Waimea High School.
