Lebeau Lagmay was awarded the Kaua‘i Adult USA Wrestler of the Year, on Saturday, at the Fourth Annual Westside Wrestling Tournament at the Hanapepe Armory.
Brandon Santiago was awarded the Kaua‘i Youth USA Wrestler of the Year.
The awards were given to the wrestler who had the best combined score in all three styles of wrestling — Greco-Roman, International Freestyle and Submission Grappling. Both Lagmay and Santiago had six bouts on Saturday, finishing first, second or third in all three.
LaTisha Alo was the only female to compete in the tournament this year and she finished second in the freestyle, 117-pound division.
‘Ele‘ele’s Daniel Quinlan won the Open 160-pound division, defeating Luke Hacker. Quinlan also finished third in the 160-pound, Novice and Intermediate divisions for Submission Grappling.
Jake Scoval took top honors in four categories — 150-pound Advanced, Submission Grappling; 155-pounds Advanced Submission Grappling; 160-pounds Advanced, Submission Grappling; and 147-pound Open Freestyle.
Tournament coordinator Ray “Mac” Piggott said he may hold another one like this later this year.
There were 56 wrestlers competing, ranging in age from 9 to 53 years old, weighing between 78 and 360 pounds. In the largest turnout in tournament history, there were 91 bouts total.
