The Department of Water is asking residents, especially those in east Kilauea, to reduce their water usage in light of the current weather conditions and heavy demand during the summer months.
East Kilauea residences include those located on Wailapa and Huli roads, Waiakalua and North Waiakalua streets, Ko‘olau and Kapuna roads, and Kuhio Highway from Wailapa to Kapuna roads.
During the most recent dry period, there was a significant increase in water usage in east Kilauea. Although no water outages were reported during periods of heavy demand, tank levels were low despite the fact that water pumps were operating at capacity.
The Department of Water is investigating the cause of the heavy demand for water in the area and will be monitoring the situation.
Residents can save water by minimizing lawn irrigation, washing vehicles, dust control and other non-essential usages.
For more information, call the Department of Water at 245-5455 during business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
