WAILUA — Cory and Kelli Oride, the brother-sister duo from Kaua‘i High School, finished with the highest rounds Saturday.
But the pair are already qualified for the upcoming David S. Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Girls and Boys Golf Championship. They earned that ride by virtue of the Red Raiders taking the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation team titles earlier in the season and will represent the KIF when the state tournament opens at the Wailua Golf Course on May 6-7 for the girls, and May 13-14 for the boys.
Joining Cory on the boys team are Wiley Yoshioka, Levi Miyashiro, Taylor Bell and Kyle Furusho while Kelli, Kristy Rapozo and Rae-Lyn Morikawa form the KIF girls team.
Cory finished the first of two qualifying rounds with a 2-under-par 70 (36-34) to pace the 19-golfer boys’ field, while Kelli topped the girls’ field with a 77 (38-39).
Second and third place berths were secured by Kaua‘i team players Miyashiro (35-37-72) and Yoshioka (37-36-73), respectively, while Waimea’s Grant Paiste settled into the fourth berth with an 80 (41-39).
Cyrus Ogawa of Kula Intermediate and High filled in the fifth berth at 81 (43-38) followed by Bell (41-40-81) and Eric Onodera (41-40-81) of Kaua‘i High in the seventh slot.
Kaua‘i golfers Mitch Keep (42-42-83) and Allen Koerte (44-40-84) filled in the eighth and ninth berths followed by another Red Raider, Jordan Oda (42-42-84) getting the tenth slot.
Kapa‘a High School, playing strong No. 2 in team play throughout the season, fielded its top golfer, Kevin Wayata in the 12th berth on a 44-44-88 followed by Justin Uegawa getting the 13th slot on a 90 (47-43) and Aaron Belmonte rounding out the Warrior field in 15th place with a 93 (50-43).
Following Paiste, Waimea placed Justin Moriguchi in 11th place with an 88 (45-43) and Jake Kuzen, the left-handed golfer, following in 16th place with a 93 (46-47). Joshua Waalani Matsusaka, carding a 107 (53-54) to end with a tie with Jacob Matutino (52-55) fill in the 17th and 18th berths, respectively.
Following Kelli in the girls’ field, Kapa‘a’s Gabby Saiki finished in the No. 2 slot on an 86 (46-41) with Morikawa settling in third with an 84 (46-38), coming in strong on the back nine.
Waimea’s Melissa Kagawa is a solid No. 4 with a 95 (48-47) followed by Rapozo in fifth at 101 (52-49). Haime Arquette (62-68-130) and Alex Dorn (66-67-133) round out the girls’ field.
The final qualifying round takes off Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Wailua Golf Course.
