KAPA‘A — Kalawai drew the bye yesterday, opening day for the seven-team Kaua‘i PONY baseball season.
The Hanapepe Cubs relied on its first baseman, who finished the day with 9 RBI in the Cubs’ 15-4 win over Lihu‘e 2 in the first of two games played out at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
In the second game, Kekaha matched up with Kapa‘a and the Lihu‘e 1 team traveled to Waimea for a meeting there.
With one out and the bases loaded in the first inning, Joey launched the first of two of his 3-RBI shots to left-centerfield to clear the pads with a stand-up triple.
But Lihu‘e 2 answered in the bottom of the frame by capitalizing on the Cubs’ pitching, scoring two of its three runs on passed balls and a tying run on a Cub throwing error.
Michael Remigio, Colin Pungan and Mason Manera each drew walks off the Cubs’ mound to load the bases before Remigio and Pungan scored on the errant pitches. Kalen Chang scored on a throwing error to the Hanapepe third base, Chang drawing laughter from the dugout after his toe snubbed the plate, sending him sprawling in the dust on the scoring play.
Hanapepe broke the stalemate with six runs in the second inning, including Joey’s second 3-RBI shot, this time a double. He continued to fuel the Cubs’ scoring, adding another RBI in the fourth on a ground-out, and highlighted his batting in the fifth inning with a 2-run in-the-park homerun to centerfield.
Kalawai enjoyed the opening day bye and will take the field Thursday starting at 4:15 p.m. when it hosts Kekaha in the first of three games played at various locations.
Lihu‘e will battle Lihu‘e 2 at Vidinha Stadium and Hanapepe will take on Waimea at Waimea. All Thursday games start at 4:15 p.m.
