KAPA‘A — Wailana Borrero, the No. 1 pitcher for Kaua‘i High School, iced the Red Raider Saturday sweep with a game-winning double in the eighth inning of Game 2.
Borrero also picked up the win on the mound, giving up eight hits to Kapa‘a, but finishing with eight strikeouts and allowing three walks in Kaua‘i’s 3-2 edge in extra innings.
Earlier, Kaua‘i may have been a tad slow in reacting to Jocelyn Enrique’s steal of home in the first inning of Game 1, but settled down to take an 8-1 win on 15 hits.
Borrero also chalked up the win on the hill for that contest, finishing with seven strikeouts and a walk while giving up six hits to the Warriors.
With the win, Kaua‘i opens the second round of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball season with a 2-0 record, and improves to 7-1 overall.
Kaua‘i next hosts Waimea on Wednesday at Isenberg Park starting at 5:30 p.m. The Menehune are yet to play in the second round and are 2-4 overall.
Kapa‘a’s loss leaves them looking for a win at 0-2 in the round while dropping to 2-6 overall.
The Raiders took an early lead in the nightcap, scoring once in the first inning and building a 2-0 lead in the third inning before sealing the deal in the top of the eighth frame.
Kapa‘a, rolling behind the bat of shortstop Hanalei Gomes, crossed runs in the fifth and sixth innings to knot the contest 2-2 before Borrero ended the stalemate in the eighth.
Gomes was 2-for-4 in both the first and second games for Kapa‘a, getting help from Enrique, 2-for-3 in Game 1, and Leeana Baltazar, 2-for-3, in Game 2.
Freshman hurler Malina Obar suffered the loss for the Warriors, giving up 15 hits while walking six and striking out one in Game 1. In Game 2, Obar improved to allowing just eight hits while striking out two Raider batters, but giving up two walks.
Borrero topped the Red Raider bats, finishing the day with three RBIs, two in Game 1 and one in Game 2. In Game 1, the starting pitcher was 3-for-3 in the box and ended Game 2 with a 2-for-3 showing.
Jori Jasper joined Borrero with three RBI, finishing Game 1 with two RBI in her 2-for-4 showing and driving in one run in her 2-for-4 performance in Game 2.
Jessica Iwata, the Raiders’ shortstop, finished with an RBI, going 3-for-4 in Game 1 and 2-for-3 in Game 2. Jaezelle Balilea was 2-for-3 in Game 2.
