WAIMEA — Waimea High School’s boys volleyball team held on to it’s top spot last night as they held off Kapa‘a High School in five sets, 22-25, 31-29, 25-16, 19-25 and 15-5.
Waimea (3-1) now wins Round 1.
It was another long night for the Menehune, having played their opponents in five sets, two games in a row. Earlier in the week, the Menehune suffered a loss to Kaua‘i High School and a loss last night would have placed all the teams in a three-way tie.
The first set was not an offensively powered. A lot of points were awarded on errors.
This held on to the second set when five out Kaua‘i’s first eight points being awarded because of Waimea errors. That set seemed to last a lifetime having gone to extra points.
Waimea at one point was down six points, but started a rally once they reclaimed possession off a Kapa‘a service error. The set would go back and forth, being tied six times starting from 23 apiece before its conclusion. Waimea’s Aaron Vea went back to serve to end the set which set up Quinn Gonsalves with the winning hit off the block of Alan Kahaunaele and Stephen Greenleaf.
Waimea then took the third set, but was pushed to a fifth when Kapa‘a quickly won the fourth. But the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship pulled off the win, 15-5.
With the win, no playoffs will be needed and Round 2 will start when Kapa‘a hosts Kaua‘i at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
