Cory Oride continued to set the pace in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf field, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Saturday match at the Princeville Makai Course.
The brisk trades appeared to take its toll on Kapa‘a and Waimea golfers, but Oride remained steady, carding a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine and finishing with a par-36 on the backside to lead the Kaua‘i team scoring.
“The boys were having a hard time out there,” said Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i High School athletic director, who visited the match between baseball games at the Ron Martin field and the volleyball games at the Bernice Hundley Gym. “There was one Kapa‘a boy who had a 41, but everybody else was higher than that. There were a lot of 50s out there.”
The Red Raiders, who captured the KIF boys title last week in Wailua, finished with a 312 followed by Kapa‘a at 349 and Waimea at 371.
Kaua‘i freshman Kelli Oride set the pace for the girls with a 77 (40-37) followed by Kapa‘a’s Gabby Saiki at 86 (44-42). Rae-Lynn Morikawa of Kaua‘i filled in the No. 3 slot at 92 (48-44), followed by Kristy Rapozo (56-51-109) and Alex Dorn (66-66-132).
Following Cory Oride, scorers for the Kaua‘i boys included Levi Miyashiro (40-36-76), Wiley Yoshioka (38-40-78) and Kyle Furusho (38-47-85).
Overall, the Raiders fared well as its individualists all shot under 100, led by Allen Koerte who carded an 87 (42-45) and Taylor Bell netting a 90 (43-47). Jordan Oda (46-48) and Eric Onadera (51-43) each finished with 94 and Mitch Keep rounded out the Kaua‘i boys with a 96 (46-50).
The 41-point score Shimabukuro referred to must have belonged to Kapa‘a’s Kevin Wataya who carded 41s on both the front and back nines to lead the Warriors with 82. Sean Mamaclay carded back-to-back 43s to finish with an 86 followed by Justin Uegawa who had the best Kapa‘a back nine at 40.
Uegawa finished with a 90 (50-40) with Dreisch Anderson (45-46-91) rounding out the Warrior team. Aaron Belmonte finished at 105 (52-53).
Justin Moriguchi set the pace for the Waimea golfers with an 85 (41-44) followed by Grant Paiste at 90 (41-49) and left-handed golfer Jake Kuzen carding a 94 (49-45). Joshua Waalani Matsusaka (54-48-102) and Adam Chandler (55-48-103) rounded out the Menehune leaders.
Ryan Wong (49-45) and Trevor Blume (46-48) represented Island School with final cards of 94 each.
Cyrus Ogawa paced the Kula Intermediate and High group with a 79 (43-36) while Eric Guyett, carding his first Under 100 last week. Ogawa continued that streak with a 99 (50-49). Matt Clark rounded out the showing at 109 (58-51).
