Kaitlyn Kaona had the honor of scoring the winning goal for her namesake team as the Kaua‘i Soccer Association opened its 2008 spring season Saturday.
According to Rick Goodale who refereed that Girls Under 14 game, Kaona was a 1-0 winner over Onipa‘a with Kaitlyn scoring the edge in the first half.
A total of 11 games marked the opening day at North Vidinha Stadium when KSA rolled out its slate of teams that cover youth from Under 8 through Under 14.
Kevin Gusman, one of the KSA officials, said that there would have been more games, but seven teams are on O‘ahu participating in the President’s Day Cup, a tournament sanctioned by the Hawai‘i Youth Soccer Association.
“The Garmas have four Westside Falcon teams in the tournament, and there are two Hokulele teams, an Under 10 and an Under 12, and Lynn Minei has a team up there,” Gusman said.
Southside Lunachicks was one of three winners in the Under 8 division, taking the Kapa‘a Blaze Diamond, 5-2 in the GU8 contest. Ha‘aheo Boys and Ha‘aheo Teeny Wahine also notched wins, the Boys taking a 1-0 match over the Westside Pride and the TW going home with a 3-0 edge over the Kapa‘a Blaze Gold.
The Kaua‘i Kickers were 4-0 better than the Kaua‘i Sparks and the Lightning Sharks came away with a 5-3 edge over Team Motiv-8 in the girls and boys Under 10 division, respectively.
The Northshore Arsenal took a 1-0 edge over Team Motiv-8 in the BU12 contest and the Chargers and Eastside Crew battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the GU12 matchup.
The GIFC-Cougars, whose orange uniforms caught the early morning sunlight, could not get going against Westside United who prevailed 6-0 in a BU14 match.
The Eastside Lightning took a 9-5 win over the Northshore Spartans in a BU14 contest, and Ha‘aheo completed a sweep on opening day as its Ha‘aheo Kaua‘i prevailed with a 3-0 win over GIFC-13 in the final GU14 match of the day.
“Those girls (Ha‘aheo Kaua‘i) have been together for a long time, and they’re really good,” Kevin Devitt, coach of the GIFC-13 said. “There aren’t that many teams that can get past them.”
Devitt said as a reminder, the KSA will be holding a United States Soccer Federation E level coaching course at the Island School complex starting this Friday through Sunday.
The course is open to anyone who would like to attend, even if they are not a HYSA or KSA coach, Devitt said.
Cost for the course is $65 and will be taught by George Kuntz, the HYSA director of coaching.
