Steve Kaui said the Kapa‘a High School football team is as ready as they can be for its rematch against Kaua‘i High School today.
“If we play the best we can, we’ll be ready,” said the first-year head coach. “I know we’ve improved this year. We’ve been able to move the ball around.”
At first meeting, the Red Raiders (1-1 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, 3-1 overall) shut out the Warriors (0-2, 1-2) 42-0.
But Kapa‘a bounced back last week and got on the boards with a Daniel Lizama touchdown against Waimea High School (2-0).
Kaui said the team needs to be more consistent in moving the ball around and to capitalize on their good plays.
“We had some good plays, but we just didn’t score any touchdowns,” he said. “Last week, we averaged 75 total yards.”
The team will rely on its offensive line of Luther Yam, Vaughn Nebre, Chavis Kupihea and Lizama. Look for Joseph Velasco to come up with strong plays for the Warrior defense.
Working the offense for Kaua‘i is starting quarterback Andrew Renaud and receivers Blake Gingerich and Tyrus Ceria-Lux. The returning KIF all-star Renaud was 12-for-23 with 178 yards at first meeting.
Kaua‘i then dropped a game against Waimea the following week. The Raiders had a bye week to work out their kinks before jumping back into competition.
Both Kaui and Kaua‘i coach Derek Borrero are in their first years in the head coaching position.
Borrero could not be reached for comment on tonight’s game. The junior varsity start off the night with kickoff at 5 p.m. at the Kapa‘a New Town Park Complex. The varsity game will follow at 7 p.m.
