Mike Scovel didn’t have to work Sunday.
The fireman based out of the Hanapepe fire station was on hand with his wife Leah to watch Aleigha Scovel net two goals, including a late-game shot from the corner, to give the Tunda Girls a 2-1 edge over the Kaua‘i Sparks.
Tailee Tangonan did the scoring honors for the Sparks, under coach Dennis Chan, who battled the blueshirts throughout the contest in the Under 10 division of the Kaua‘i Soccer Association’s Seven-a-Side league at the North Vidinha field.
“Aleigha was real patient,” said one of the spectators. “She just waited for her shot, and when it came, she shot.”
In the second game of that division, the Westside Falcons 10 outshot the Westside Falcons 9 to a 2-1 edge.
The victory gives the Westside Falcons sole possession of the lead in the U10 division.
Earlier in the day, Micah Efhan netted two scores with Noah Tangalin adding one as the Ha‘aheo Boys blanked the Westside Falcons 3-0 in the first of three Under 8 contests.
Despite a concerted defensive effort by the orange-shirted Kapa‘a Blaze, the girls succumbed to Westside Pride 6-0, and the greenshirts of High Maintenance dropped to the Ha‘aheo Teeny Wahine, 7-0 to round out the U8 games.
Following the results of Sunday’s contests, Ha‘aheo TW and Westside Pride share undefeated records for 6 points each in the KSA standings.
“The pinkshirts have a bye today, but I still have to juggle between three teams,” said coach Bobbie Rapozo, who flitted between watching the GIFC-13, GIFC-14 and the Ha‘aheo Boys before settling in to help coach the Ha‘aheo TW.
The KSC-Blazing Angels were all over the field to nip the Panthers 6-1 in the first of two U12 games, the second one giving the Hawaiian Heat a 4-0 edge over the Lihu‘e Elements.
Following the Sunday games, both the KSC-Blazing Angels and Hawaiian Heat share the lead in the U12 division with 1-0-1 records and 4 points each.
In the first of three Under 14 games, the GIFC-Cougars pounced on the Westside Falcons 9-3 in a BU14 contest followed by the GIFC-13 and GIFC-14 battling to a 1-1 tie. Westside United was 7-1 better than the Eastside Galaxy in the final contest of the day.
The GIFC-Cougars improved to 2-0 and 6 points to hold sole possession of the lead in that division.
Games continue Sunday at the North Vidinha soccer fields starting at 11:30 a.m.
