C. Ronald Harker of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and formerly of Kaua‘i, died Aug. 21, 2007, in Seattle, Wash., at the age of 83.
Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Santa Cruz, Calif., he served as an air traffic controller for the U.S. Army Air Corp in China during World War II. On Kaua‘i, he was general manager for Garden Island Motors on Kaua‘i, where he was elected to represent Kaua‘i on the first State school board, retiring as state vice chairman. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Lihu‘e Union Church; former president of Friends of the Library and Kiwanis of Kaua‘i. He was also a member of the Koloa Community Chest Drive, Lihu‘e Red Cross, Kaua‘i Planning Commission and Koloa Community Association.
Preceded in death by his wife, “Betty” Helen Elizabeth Barton, he is survived by sons Randy (Nancy) Harker of Koloa and David Harker of Honolulu; daughters Marilyn Harker of Puhi, Jan (Tom) Reyes of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Gail Harker of Fair Oaks, Calif.; brother Peter (Mary) Harker of Shell Beach, Calif., and sister Alice (Bill) Mitchell of Essex, CT; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Ron’s life was held on Bainbridge Island.

Benita Dumayas Batangan of ‘Ele‘ele died Aug. 10, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 84.
Born Aug. 22, 1922, in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughters Apolonia (Stanley Oshima) Ramelb and Melchora (Monico) Paguirigan; son Jose (Magdalena) Batangan and sister Eduvejes Patinga; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at ‘Ele‘ele Sacred Hearts Church where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Emilio Olivas
Emilio “Spud” Olivas of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 23, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born in Waimea on Sept. 8, 1926, “Spud” was very active in the community and a very dependable part of many worthy causes. He was an avid bowler, long-time fisherman and frequent visitor with his friends to Las Vegas. He retired as an administrator with the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations on Kaua‘i. He was also a long-time member of the East Kauai Lions Club. He will be remembered for the wonderful music he shared with all.
Preceded in death by his parents Fruto and Felipa Olivas, brother Flor Miguel, sisters Catalina Valdez and Consuelo Cuaresma, he is survived by his wife Mercedes L. Olivas; son Michael Olivas, Sr. of Lihu‘e; daughter Marlene Greer of Lihu‘e; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother Rick Miguel of California.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Lihue Christian Church, service officiated by Rev. Donna Faith Elderege will begin at 10:30 a.m. Bright aloha attire is suggested. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a favorite charity or the East Kauai Lions Club.

Joseph Katsumi Nakazawa
Joseph Katsumi Nakazawa of Kilauea died Aug. 18, 2007, at Queen’s Hospital at the age of 37.
Born July 1, 1970, in Lihu‘e, he was a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by his wife Leeander Boiser-Nakazawa of Kilauea; daughters Asia Boiser Nakazawa of Kilauea, Kalia Boiser of Kilauea and Kira Boiser of Kilauea, father Jackie (Faith) Nakazawa of Kilauea, mother Letha Nakazawa of Oregon, brother Robb Maxfield of Florida, sister Lisa; special friends, uncles aunts and cousins.
The family suggests casual attire and asks that flowers be omitted.
Friends may visit with the family at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at ‘Anini Beach, where a celebration of Joseph’s life will be at 1 p.m. A potluck gathering will follow.

Nicasio Balisacan
Nicasio Agmata Balisacan of Kapa‘a died Aug. 16, 2007. at his home at the age of 96.
Born Dec. 14, 1910, in the Philippines, he was a laborer.
He is survived by his wife Erlinda Balisacan; son Arnel (Jackie) Balisacan; daughters Lorelei (Rey Tumamao) Balisacan and Evelyn (Burt Ines) Balisacan; grandson Chasen Tumamao and granddaughter Jada Ines; numerous nieces and nephews; Spottie and Kui-Girl.
Family and friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.

Salud “Sally” Samiano
Salud “Sally” (Julian) Samiano, of Hanama‘ulu, died at her home on Aug. 25, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Oct. 24, 1919, she was a retired sales clerk with Robert’s Shoe Store.
Preceded in death by husband Jose Samiano Sr. and son Marcial Samiano; brother Johnny Fabian; and daughter-in-law Mary Samiano, she is survived by sons Jose (Virginia) Samiano Jr. of O‘ahu, Dante Samiano of Los Angeles, Rudy (Katherine) Samiano of Wailua Homesteads and Melvin (Constance) Samiano of Los Angeles; daughters Carmen (Richard) Ubasa of Honolulu, Evelyn (Marcelino) Taroc of Wailua Homesteads; hanai daughter Cecilia Ramirez of Honolulu; brother Herman (Yolanda) Fabian of Hanama‘ulu; sister Fe Flores of Kapa‘a; daughter-in-law Emily Samiano of Honolulu; sister-in-law Nina Fabian of Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. Yolanda Tabura Cabinatan of Hanama‘ulu died at home on Aug. 20, 2007, at the age of 58.
Born on Kaua‘i on Feb. 3, 1949, she was an accounting clerk at the Hilton Beach Resort.
She is survived by her husband Panfilo, daughter Lisa (Damon Summers), son Leonard, sisters Lourdes (Norman) Agoot, Marie (Tomoo) Hiranaka, Sally Ann (Jeff) Wright-Callejo, Katherine (Larry) Akau, Melanie (Michael) Marshall, Tanya (Tabura) Begley, Robin Domingo, Andralyn Corbin, and Anel Perreira; brothers Venancio Baran Tabura, Clifford (Danet) Lee, Derwyn (Cecil) Ujano, and Kevin Lee (Aimee) Tabura; eight grandchildren, Chyson and Alyssa Chow-Cabinatan, Wesric Kaneakua Jr, Taryn and Bailey Summers, Lenele Rodrigues Cabinatan, Lance Kekoa Cabinatan, and Madisyn Cabinatan; three great-grandchildren, Keilyn Hashimoto, Kimana Cabinatan, and Ayden Cacabelos.
Services will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, at Immaculate Conception Church with visitation from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. Scattering of ashes to follow at Kapa‘a Bay. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.

Felix Castelo Jr.
Felix (Dong) Castelo Jr. of Kilauea died at home on Aug. 22, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born in Kilauea on March 18, 1927, he was a groundskeeper for Princeville Corporation.
Preceded in death by his parents Felix and Raphaela Castelo, Sr.; sisters Rose Lopez, Eleanor Kinney; brothers John Castelo, Peter Castelo, and Donald Castelo, he is survived by sisters Felisa Villanueva, Mary (Masa) Yoshimura, and Charlene (Eddie) Sarita; brothers Edward (Sidra) Castelo and Joseph Castelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at St. Sylvester’s Church in Kilauea where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
The family suggets casual attire and asks that flowers be omitted. Burial to follow immediately at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Roy Katsuaki Oshiro
Roy Katsuaki Oshiro of Koloa, died Aug. 22, 2007, at Straub Clinic and Hospital at the age of 64.
Born in Honolulu, he was a former superintendent for Moseman Construction Company and a retired plant worker for Kauai Coffee. He was also an active member of Takara Doshi Kai.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Gaal-Oshiro; sons Richard Oshiro, Keith Oshiro, Troy Oshiro and step-son Wade Gaal; daughter Janine Oshiro and step-daughter Jade Braithwaite; one grandchild; brothers Ronald Oshiro and Francis Oshiro; sisters Suzanne Oshiro and Grace Oshiro.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, where service will begin at 4 p.m.
The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Hubert “Billy” Brandt of Kekaha died at his home on Aug. 17, 2007, at the age of 62.
Born in Honolulu, O‘ahu, on April 24, 1945, he was a retired supply technician with Dyne Electron/Pacific Missile Range Facility.
Preceded in death by parents Hubert and Roselani Brandt; and sisters Althea Lazaro (Damiano) and Joyce Puu, he is survived by brother Melvin (Sweetheart) Berengue Sr. of O‘ahu; caregivers/nephews, Chico (Elise) Lazaro, Leroy Lazaro, Michael (Wanda) Lazaro, all of Kekaha, Kimo (Rochelle) Lazaro of Waimea and Damien (Theri) Lazaro of Kalaheo; caregiver/niece, Lani (Kainoa) Keuma of Hanapepe; brother-in-law Charlie Puu of O‘ahu; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joseph Farias Jr. of Lawa‘i died Aug. 26, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 83.
Born Dec. 23, 1923, in Hawai‘i, he was a retired supervisor for the state of Hawai‘i Harbors Division.
He is survived by his wife Ethel Farias; daughter Joanne (George) Coates; sons Eugene (Jodi) Farias and Elroy (Darlene) Farias; one brother; five sisters; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Juliet Arzadon of Kapa‘a died Aug. 26, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 43.
Born June 4, 1964, in Lihu‘e, she was a prep cook for Tropical Burgers.
She is survived by her husband Edwin Acob of Kapa‘a; daughters Tasha Acob and Natalya Acob, both of Kapa‘a; son Gavin Acob of Kapa‘a; mother Ester Arzadon of Kapa‘a; sister Karen Arzadon of Kapa‘a; brothers David Arzadon of Kapa‘a and Stuart Arzadon of Honolulu; in-laws Eliseo and Denona Acob of Kapa‘a; nieces and nephews.

Dean Hesapene
Dean Patrick Hesapene died on Aug. 16, 2007, at Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 51.
Born on April 19, 1956, in Waimea, he is preceded in death by his brother Kenneth “Choch” Hesapene and his mother-in-law Rosalita Ogawa. He is survived by his wife Juno, his children Jeremy, Channin and Jessica and his grandson Jaylen, all of San Diego. He is also survived by parents Cora and Magua Hesapene of Kekaha, brothers Marvin (Iris) and David (Camille) of Hanapepe, sisters Verna (Mike) Kirsch of Bremerton, Wash., Sharon (Byron) Ariola of Lihu‘e and Audrey (Steve) Franco of Kekaha.
Visitation with family will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, Rosary will follow. The celebration of Dean’s life will be at 2 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighboorhood Center. Balboa Cremation Services assisted the Hesapene family with cremation arrangements.

Genoveva B. Pasion of Lihu‘e died Aug. 27, 2007, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 88.
Born May 1, 1919, in the Philippines, she was a laborer.
She is survived by sons Art (Cherry) Pasion and Francis (Trudy) Pasion; daughters Bett (Robert) Leonilo, Connie (Mercelo) Fernandez, Delina Sagucio, Eliros (Bernard) Reyes; and nine grandchildren.
