The first race of the Junior Invitational Series starts Thursday at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
Hosted by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club, the Junior Series consists of four races, held each Thursday in June, where each boat must have a junior sailor, aged 14 to 21, aboard to be eligible.
The public is invited to watch the races from the Nawiliwili jetty wall, and join the fun at the post-race party at the NYC Clubhouse. First flag is at 5 p.m.
Olympian Brandon Slay visits for wrestling camp
The Westside Wrestling Club of Kaua‘i is hosting its second annual all-day clinic on June 23. The clinic will be taught by 2000 U.S. Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Champion Brandon Slay.
The following day, June 24, the club will host its annual USA-sanctioned tournament. Both events will be at the Waimea High School gym.
Wrestlers are required to have a 2007 USA wrestling card to attend the clinic and tournament. USAW cards may be purchased at the clinic or the tournament, or purchased at www.themat.com. Wrestlers under the age of 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver on the USAW card application.
The clinic and tournament is for wrestlers and coaches of all ages and genders.
The tournament will be International Freestyle rules, with pairings based on age and weight class.
Saturday’s clinic will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Early weigh-in and registration for Sunday’s tournament will be accepted after the clinic. Final Sunday morning weigh-ins and registration starts at 10 a.m. The competition starts at noon.

Namolokama holds Open Water Swim
The Namolokama O’ Hanalei Canoe Club is hosting the 1st annual Hanalei Bay Open Water Swim community event on July 7. The event is for young and old.
Registration will be at 7 a.m. that day, next to the Hanalei Pier with the youth events starting at 9 a.m. Keiki will swim around the Hanalei Pier in two events: 8 and under and 9 to 13 years. A 1/2 mile swim is available for 13 to 18 year olds, and a 1-mile swim will be held for all adult age groups.
These distances will be from the pier towards the pavilion, around a buoy and back to the pier.
Medals for first through third places in each division will be awarded, and all participants will receive a ribbon. A special T-shirt has been designed to highlight this event.
Pre-registration needs to be completed by June 27 or earlier. Forms are available either on the Web site www.namolokama.com or at various surf and bike shops or athletic or swim clubs.
