San Jose State extends Tomey’s contract

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose State added two years to coach Dick Tomey’s contract Thursday as a reward for reviving its football program.
Tomey, the 68-year-old former coach at Arizona and Hawai‘i who took over at San Jose State in December 2004, is now signed through 2010. Financial terms weren’t immediately available.
The Spartans went 8-4 this season and earned a berth in the New Mexico Bowl — their first postseason appearance in 16 years. They will face New Mexico on Dec. 23.
“The progress that Coach Tomey has made in a short amount of time is impressive and is indicative of his character,” athletic director Tom Bowen said. “Dick Tomey is one of the great gentlemen in the game, and he sets an example for the rest of the programs here at San Jose State.”
Tomey, whose Spartans won as many games this season as they did in the previous three combined, has 169 career victories in 26 seasons as a head coach.
The Spartans went 5-3 in Western Athletic Conference play — their best conference record in 11 years — and nearly upset unbeaten Boise State, which needed a field goal as time expired to survive last month’s meeting.
