LOS ANGELES — Pam Tambini tied her career-high 20 points for the University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball team.
But the effort fell short as LMU rebounded from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the Rainbow Wahine 76-69 Thursday.
Besides Tambini, Hawai‘i got the bulk of its scoring from Janevia Taylor, who finished with 16 points and a team-high seven assists while Saundra Cariaga poured in a career-best 16 points in the effort.
Jennifer Hall led the Lions with 24 points, nearly half of her points coming from the charity stripe. The Lions converted on 16 of 17 free throws in the second half to help seal the comeback.
Hawai‘i led the entire first half, grabbing a double-digit lead less than eight minutes into the game. The Rainbow Wahine defense sparked numerous fast break opportunities to give UH a lead as high as 17 points before settling for the 38-26 lead at the half.
The UH defense held the Lions to just seven field goals and a 27 percent shooting in the first half.
But LMU came out shooting in the second half with a 19-6 run. Kativa Goss gave the Lions its first lead in the game by hitting a 3-pointer at the 13-minute mark.
Eight lead changes marked the following seven minutes before the Lions went up for good with Valerie Ogoke’s free throws capping a 9-point run that put LMU up by seven with five minutes remaining.
UH concludes its three-game Southern California road trip with a meeting against USC Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. PST.
