Waimea High School softball girls finished second in their annual tournament.
The Menehune, dropping to the eventual champion Mililani Trojans, now open the gates to the Waimea Canyon Park as the KIF opens its softball season Wednesday.
Cassie “Bird” Koerte handled the pitching duties with strong support from Kelsie Igne at first, Marie Beth Watanabe at second, Shana Tafiti at shortstop and Moani Durante at third.
This sets up a showdown as Kapa‘a Warriors also field a strong infield. Stephanie Kawamura has been paying her dues through the years and has shown maturity in her pitching.
Cassie Mundon anchors the plate with Leana Baltazar and Loke Manaku nailing down the corner slots.
The addition of Hanalei Gomes at second and the glue from the Warrors’ field general Jocelyn Enrique at short gives Kapa‘a the weapons it needs to be competitive in the league.
As if that’s not enough, add color in leftfield as senior Ella Arume was protective of her red hibiscus, gingerly setting it aside while she donned her batting helmet, but returning it to her ear before trotting out to field.
On Saturday, the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders will host Waimea at Isenberg Field in a double-header at 10 a.m.
