KOLOA — The field was just too tempting for the handful of young boys.
While their coaches and parents worked over the day’s offering, members of the Westside Falcons took advantage of a soccer ball to romp through the meadow at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens Visitor Center.
“They grew up, so now they’re just the Westside Falcons,” said Jane Garma, president of the Falcons’ group. “But they still wear black, so they are still the boys in black.”
The Westside Falcons were raising funds to attend a soccer tournament on O‘ahu during the upcoming President’s Day weekend. This was done by offering hot dogs, drinks and an assortment of salads during the NTBG craft fair. Garma said the teams went to the tournament last year and want to do it again so decided they would do the food offering as a fund-raiser.
“Right after they come home from the tournament, the season starts, so the boys will be busy,” Garma said.
The Westside Falcons consist of soccer teams for keiki in the 8-, 10- and 12-year-old divisions, Garma said. The teams will play in the Hawai‘i Youth Soccer Association season this spring.
Len Nitta, Tony Garma, Bobo Ishikawa, Robert Medeiros and Roy Matsuyama serve as coaches.
“And all the parents of the boys,” one parent said, looking up from one of her salad creations.
Besides the boys wearing black, look for the group under the shade — one sure way to tell the Westsiders.
