All hail the ‘Supper-ferry’
Regarding Rod Haraga’s (Superferry has run the gantlet, The Garden Island Forum, Oct. 13) comments.
He is “Right On” in my opinion.
Methinks that the people who are saying that the “Supper-Ferry” should be stopped must be people who want all of the Island of Kaua‘i to remain rural at any cost. That is a noble cause but it also shows limited thinking and selfish thinking. Allow me to explain. If the island stops all building, the number of jobs available will diminish, the cost of housing will increase. Then only the wealthy will be able to own property and the middle class will turn into renters without good jobs. The young will need to leave in order to better themselves.
My suggestion is to allow housing units, preferably high rise condos, to be built inland away from the beach areas. No building taller than a coconut tree near the beaches. Get rid of the ag land restrictions. Let those owners develop their land into living space for affordable units. Again, high rise condos or apartments.
Try to get the state to attract businesses that will give the young people well paying jobs. These could be in the computer and science area. Our young should not need to be servants and cooks, chefs and gardeners to the wealthy and the tourists unless they enjoy that kind of work. For some it is a very rewarding way to make a living but it should not be all that is available.
Could I be wrong? Of course, but at least think about a way to solve these problems, not just tell me where I am wrong. After all it is just my 2 cents worth.
By the way the “Super-ferry” is a done deal, so start thinking about how to improve the life on this island for the young people growing up here. Not what will make your life so nice and rural, but what will make the lives of the young nice and affordable.

Be responsible when you testify to the Kaua’i County Council.
In the Oct. 11 County Council meeting, one member of the public got up more than once and complained about a “procedural” issue.
He was upset that the second public hearing, which was scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., actually started at 6 p.m. He then claimed that people were being denied their rights under the Sunshine Law, even though the council had just taken a few hours of public testimony on the sunsetting ADU law issue — during which this complainant had at least two times at the podium and said very little of value.
When challenged by a council member on what he would do to resolve this “problem,” the complainant again had nothing of import to say. Instead, he complained about being cut off.
I’m all for people exercising their rights, but there are some people who go into some of these council meetings seemingly just to hear themselves talk and demand that others listen. This particular person has been put on notice by the council chairman at least once for abusing procedures in providing public testimony, and I think his behavior has a deleterious effect on council meetings. I’m not an apologist for the council, as the behavior of some members is sometimes very annoying, but the public needs to be responsible with the time they are given when they go to testify, lest they find their rights in jeopardy.

Shook up
Of all the weekends I could have picked to visit my daughter who lives in O‘ahu, I picked this one. Because of jetlag, I was wide awake and surfing the net in my daughter’s condo Sunday morning.
Shortly after 7 a.m., I heard, what I thought was a train coming through the parking lot outside of the open condo window. As I got up to look outside, the earth moved. My daughter was just coming in from walking her dog, and was standing in the doorway of the room. Not being a resident of the islands or knowing what is a common occurance, and not wanting to seem unsophisticated, I tried to act nonchalant about having just experienced an earthquake. I said, “Hmmm, that felt like an earthquake.”
My daughter said, “Yeah … a big one.”
With no electricity, not having the luxury of my hair dryer was the first hardship. We drove to church but were turned away, as service was cancelled. And then, we found that Zippy’s was the only place on the island to get something to eat and that was slightly still-warm chili and rice with lukewarm coffee. As the day wore on, I found that I was very grateful for what we got at Zippy’s.
By the way, I came from the city that made meteorological history last week for having experienced the earliest seasonal snowfall … I think the angry weather gods are following me. Don’t worry, Hawai‘i … for your sake, if the airport is open, I’ll be going home soon. But I look forward to my next visit.

A seismic connection
The last big tsunami happened after all the bombing in Iraq. They were using bunker blasters that sink deep into the earth. Now after the Koreans tested there has been an earthquake and seismic activity in Japan. How long before people realize there is a correlation?

Ebinger deserves defending
How come you let only one side of what people are thinking and saying about Mike Ebinger?
You only let the people who were staying at the house speak up in defense of Mike and they really didn’t know him, only by staying there they got to know him well enough to know his true heart.
You never let anyone know that is was self-defense, but he did do all his time for the defense of the families and the other people who were living at that beach when Munson came down with the gun he was killed with. Do you call all our United States Army people who shoot the kids and women in the war we are in now murderers? Mike did his time for the freedom that we all enjoy. So, why don’t you say anything about Munson and his buddy — burning camps down to grow their pot in the valley that Mike and the other families were being run out by gun and fire? We all know what the Army teaches you to do is kill to protect where you and the others live. Mike did his time, he’s out now and should be left alone. Maybe trespassers who need money for their ice should take half the blame. Have you ever seen an ice head? They are the ones who steal and rob you at gun point, for their habit. Trespassing is also against the law too. That’s why they have a parking lot and a trail that goes to Secret Beach. It was made to keep the trespassers off the land. How would you like it if just anybody walks by your windows and other stuff you keep around the house, then stuff starts to disappear? Mike was wrong; he, or the landowner (who was gone at the time ), should have called the cops. But you should stop calling Mike a killer. It was man-slaughter. He did his time, just like those child molesters who live right down the road from us all. To find out where, just look it up.
