Despite the rainy conditions at Ke’ehi Lagoon on O’ahu, KIF teams managed to take a respectable stand at the 2006 HHSAA/First Hawaiian Bank State Canoe Paddling Championships yesterday.
Kula’s boys team was the highest KIF finisher with a fifth place showing, about five seconds behind Kamehameha-O’ahu, the boys state champions.
Kapa’a’s boys managed an eighth place ride, nine seconds behind Kula.
Punahou took the girls title, with Kapa’a (4:41.30) and Kaua’i (4:42.59) finishing seventh and eight, respectively. The Buff-nblu snapped Kamehameha-O’ahu’s streak of four straight state championships.
However, the ILH (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) has now won every boys and girls title in the five year history of the tournament.
Kamehameha-Maui won the mixed title, with no KIF team placing in the top eight.
The top two teams from each division received trophies and medals. KIF teams competing in the event included Kapa’a’s boys, girls, and mixed squads, Kaua’i’s girls team, and Kula’s boys and mixed squads.
