The West Kaua‘i Angels seemed to be part of the defense for K-Makule in this seven inning, down-to-the-wire game against West Kaua‘i.
K-Makule scored first in the top of the first inning with two outs. Gordon Arakaki and Guy Ruiz were on second and first when Danny Smith hit a blooper to right center to score Arakaki. Doric Remata followed with a double and Ruiz scored for the first two runs of the game.
West Kaua‘i was not to be outdone in the first, however. With lead-off batter Bob Merkle drawing a walk, Frank Bukoski hit a single to right center, and Larry Ephan drove a three-run home run over the right field fence for three runs in the first for West Kaua‘i.
Yuki Shigeta led off the K-Makule second with a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Guy Ruiz. Lefty Remata and Herman Fraticelli both singled to right field and with the bases loaded, Eddie Dela Cruz hit into a fielders choice taking out Fraticelli at second but allowing Ruiz to score. John Taboniar, and Arakaki came up with singles and Guy Ruiz with a double, leading to four runs in the inning.
In the bottom of the third, West Kaua‘i rallied to tie the score at six-all. With Maxie Moreno hitting a single and Merkle drew a walk, Larry Ephan again hit a long ball over the right field fence and West Kaua‘i to drive in three.
In the top of the fourth inning, K-Makule lashed out for three more runs when Eddie Dela Cruz got a base hit, and Gordon Arakaki drew a walk. With two outs, Guy Ruiz smashed a three-run in-the-park homer to the right field fence.
West Kaua‘i came through again in the bottom of the fourth when the first three Angels batters, Pat Pavao, Joe Tafua and John Patt, all came up with singles to load the bases. Maxie Moreno nailed a base hit to center field allowing Pavao and Tafua to score. Patt ended up on third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Richard Carveiro.
Daniel Manus then scooted one just past the second baseman to score a run, putting the score after four, West Kaua‘i 10, K-Makule 9.
In the top of the fifth inning, K-Makule came up with four runs on a West Kaua‘i error and six base hits from Yuki Shigeta, Taboniar, Arakaki, Guy Ruiz, Smith and Doric Remata.
West Kaua‘i came up with two runs in the bottom of the fifth with Bukoski got on with a single, Ephan, a walk, and Bernard Mahuiki scored both with a base hit. After five innings the score was K-Makule 13, West Kaua‘i 12.
In the sixth, West Kaua‘i pushed across the run to tie the game. Since neither team scored in the seventh, the game went into extra innings, with the International Rule in force.
In the top of the eighth, K-Makule came up with four critical runs. West Kaua’i scored just two runs in the bottom of the eight and the game ended K-Makule 18, West Kaua‘i 16.

Rookies 16, West Kaua‘i 12
The Rookies started strong, with three runs in the top of the first inning. Hank Nishikawa drew a walk, Nelson Mendonca hit a single, and Walter Souza hit a sacrifice fly. Raymond Espino hit into a fielders’ choice allowing Mendonca to score run number two. Mike Folster and Stan Dela Cruz hit singles and Archie Fontanilla got on with a West Kaua‘i error scoring Folster.
West Kaua‘i tied the score with three runs off a Rookies error, a sacrifice fly from Frank Bukoski, a base hit from Junior Rivera and a two-run homer from Bernard Mahuiki.
Five runs came across for the Rookies in the top of the third inning on base hits from Nishikawa, Mendonca, Folster, Fontanilla and Wayne Hashimoto, topped a two-run homer from Stan Dela Cruz.
In the bottom of the fourth inning West Kaua‘i jumped ahead of the Rookies, 10-8, by scoring seven runs on base hits from Pat Pavao, Joe Tafua, William Rita, Maxie Moreno, Albert Carveiro, Daniel Manus and a three run homer from Larry Ephan.
In the top of the fifth inning the Rookies came up with five critical runs on hits from Mendonca, Souza, Espino, Folster, Fontanilla and Hashimoto, taking the lead.
West Kaua‘i rallied with their eleventh run in the bottom of the fifth on base hits from Mahuiki and Tafua.
The Rookies put three more runs on the board in the sixth inning off two West Kaua‘i errors and base hits from Nishikawa, Souza, Espino and Folster.
West Kaua‘i scored their final run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk to Rivera, but the comeback fell short.
Hitters for the Rookies were: Hashimoto and Dela Cruz (one HR) with 2 for 4, Nishikawa, Espino and Souza (four RBIs) with 2 for 3, Mendonca and Fontanilla with 3 for 4 and Folster with 4 for 4. The winning pitcher was Fontanilla.

East Kaua‘i 19, Kawaihau 5
Ron Javier scored the first East Kaua‘i run in the top of the first inning on a base hit from Rick Ramones.
In the second inning East Kaua‘i brought their score to seven when six runs came across on hits from Ronnie Holt, Ned Nightowl, Norman Holt, Don Boro and Dickie Koerte.
In the third inning East Kaua‘i scored the maximum runs allowed (seven) per inning with hits going to Jerome Hew, Ronnie Holt, Al Salvador, Nightowl, Javier and Alex Youn plus a two-run homer by Donald Boro.
The final five East Kaua‘i runs came in the fourth inning with Rick Ramones getting on with a Kawaihau error, followed by five hits from Hew, Ronnie Holt, Ernest Koerte, Ray Sam Fong and Boro.
Hitters for East Kaua‘i were: Nightowl and Ernest Koerte with 2 for 3, Youn and Dickie Koerte with 2 for 4, Ronnie Holt with 3 for 3, and Boro with 3 for 4, a home run and three RBIs. The winning pitcher was Ronnie Holt.
Kawaihau scored their first two runs in the bottom of the second inning on three base hits from Jack Lucas, Paul Gusman, Teddy Daligdig and a sacrifice fly from Paul Awazu.
The last three runs came in the fifth inning when with one out Frank Kohler got a hit and came around on Tats Tamashiro’s home run. Al Alfonso followed with a double and scored on a hit by Sherwood Iida. Hitters for Kawaihau were: Calvin Fujita and Jack Lucas with 2 for 3. The losing pitcher was Teddy Daligdig.
Lihu‘e A’s 13, Kuku’s Aces 2
The Aces scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning when, with one runner on Ben Pescador hit a homer. He went 1 for 2. The losing pitcher was Stanley Rita.
Lihu‘e A’s came up with seven runs in the first inning on hits from Pete Rayno, Tomoo Hiranaka, Randy Tomlinson, Bruddah Reittmeister, Ernest Domingo, Russell Bardago, Glenn Akina and Ismo Yoshishige.
In the second inning, Lihu‘e chalked up run number eight on a sacrifice fly from Rayno scoring Herb Honjo.
In the third inning with two runners on, Akina hit a home run. Yoshishige, Ed Bales, Dwight Fujii and Rayno followed with base hits, and with Bales and Rayno drove in two runs each. Hitters for the Lihu‘e A’s were: Reittmeister, Domingo, Bardago, and Yoshishige with 2 for 3, Rayno and Bales with 2 for 2. The winning pitcher was Hiranaka.
