The Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association held its annual Chica Ishii Stroke Play Championship over the Memorial Day weekend. The 54-Hole stroke play competition is held in honor of one of KJGA’s founders, the late Chica Ishii. The tournament was played at Wailua Golf Course for the first two rounds and Kaua‘i Lagoon’s, Mokihana Golf Course for the final round.
In the 15-18 age bracket, Championship Flight (Blue Tees), T.J. Kua, 15, the grandson of Ishii, carded rounds of 72, 77, 70, for a total of three over par 219 to take first-place honors. In second-place was Cyrus Ogawa with scores of 75, 74, 77, for a total of 226. Tied for third were Sean Ogawa and Kellen Watabu at 228.
In the 15-18 age bracket, “A” Flight (Boys Blue Tees, Girls White Tees), Miki Ueoka walked away with the first-place prize, shooting 78, 79, 77, for a total of 234. Wiley Yoshioka came in second with 244 and Bubby Saiki finished third with 249. Saiki shot his career best at Wailua from the Blue Tees on Saturday, breaking the 80 mark with a 78.
Cory Oride captured first-place for the Boys 13-14 age group who played for the White Tees, with scores of 78, 83, 81, for a total of 242. Coming in second was Shea Shimabukuro with a total of 252, and in third was Levi Miyashiro at 259.
In a shootout in the girls 13-14 age group (Red Tees), Kelli Oride came out on top with scores of 85, 80, 82, for a total of 247, followed by Malia Saiki with 257 and Rae-Lyn Morikawa finishing in third with 259.
Finally in the boys 12-and-under age group (Red Tees), Noa Matsuyoshi using Uncle Masa’s brand new driver, walked away with first-place with a total of 263 over Justin Uegawa at 275, Kyle Groves at 300 and Reyn Morioka at 302.
