Kaua‘i cowgirls rope funds for YMCA
The All-Girls Rodeo Association helped out its sponsor, Kaua‘i’s YMCA, with a fundraising swap meet on April 16 at the Y’s lot in Puhi.
The lot is the future home of the new YMCA facility. All Girls Rodeo president Nancy McMahon presented YMCA director Tom Tannery, with a $280 donation from the Swap Meet toward the building fund.
The cowgirls’ next community service event will be the “Horseback Ride for Charity,” a benefit for the Hawai‘i Hotel and Lodging Association’s annual Charity Walk.
The “bring your own horse” ride takes place on May 7 at CJM Stables in Po‘ipu. For more information, contact association secretary Linda Antipala at 742-7595.
Youth basketball tourney coming

Coaches or teams of players in the 12 and under and 14 and under programs from around the island are encouraged to participate.
Limited invitations will be extended to the islands of Maui, O‘ahu, and Hawai‘i and the tournament will entertain all participating teams on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Entry blanks are available at the golf course and all golfers 55-and-older are welcome.
Heat sweep Nets
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Dwyane Wade more than filled the void of Shaquille O’Neal’s scoreless first half by scoring a postseason career-high 34 points and setting up the big guy for most of his 17 second-half points as the Miami Heat completed a first-round sweep of the New Jersey Nets with a 110-97 win Sunday.
Miami’s seventh straight win over Jason Kidd and company guarantees that O’Neal will have at least a full week to rest before the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Eddie Jones added 21 points, and O’Neal shot 7-for-9 in the second half after missing all five in the first half. Miami shot 54.9 percent from the field with Wade leading the way, making 13-of-20.
New Jersey was eliminated early because it shot poorly the entire series. Game 4 was another lowlight, a 39.5 percent effort that included a woeful 6-of-22 effort by Vince Carter. Kidd, who struggled most of the series, had his best game, scoring 25 points on 9-for-19 shooting.
Gordon dominates in overtime win
TALLADEGA, Ala. — Jeff Gordon proved again he is NASCAR’s new king of restrictor-plate racing.
Gordon fought off challenger after challenger Sunday and had to go to overtime to win the Aaron’s 499 Nextel Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway.
It was Gordon’s fourth victory in the last five races at Talladega and Daytona, the only tracks at which NASCAR requires the horsepower-sapping plates to slow the cars.
The four-time Cup champion led a dominating 139 of the 194 laps on the 2.66-mile oval. He finally held off Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip at the end of a two-lap shootout, which was set up by a six-car crash with one lap remaining that ended the chances of fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr.
By staying up front most of the day, Gordon was able to avoid a wild 25-car crash that took out several top contenders, as well as the crash on lap 187 that involved Earnhardt, series points leader Jimmie Johnson and pole-winner Kevin Harvick.
