After getting stomped upon by OIA power-house Kalaheo on Wednesday, the Kaua‘i High School basketball squad did its own stomp-ing on Thursday against first-time state entrant, Kamehameha-Maui by the score of 70-35.
The Red Raiders, who were blitzed by the Mustangs, 66-53 in first round action, took their frustrations out on a young Warrior squad, filled with underclassmen. Kaua‘i also dominated in the paint, outscoring Kamehameha-Maui, 46-20.
The more experienced Kaua‘i team took full ad-vantage of its experience with eight seniors leading the way for the KIF champions, who improved their record to 11-4, including preseason.
With the win, the Red Raiders also earned a shot at the consolation title on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Kaimuki/Waiakea match-up.
Senior center Futi Tavana sparked another Kaua‘i win with a season-high 31 points. Meanwhile, senior guard Jeremy Manuel, who is playing in his fourth state tournament, came away with eight points.
Junior shooting guard Josh Bradbury put up seven points in the win.
The Red Raiders smothered Kamehameha-Maui from start to finish. The Warriors, who couldn’t find the answer to any Red Raider problem, are ousted from tournament play. The eighth seed in the MIL tournament, surprised the rest of the field with big wins, en route to their first-ever state tournament showing.
