The leading Waimea High School Menehune baseball team holds the reins to the Ron Martin Baseball tournament into the final day of play, today.
Following a 23-12 marathon victory over the hosting Kapa‘a Warriors, Thursday, the Menehune capitalized on Red Raider miscues to take a 10-8 decision, Friday afternoon before a good-sized audience at the Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua‘i, who had blanked Pac 5, 10-0 on opening day behind the pitching of Kirby Yates, answered a Waimea run in the first inning Friday, and surged ahead, 4-1 on a two-RBI Russell McCluskey single.
But, the Menehune never waivered, and in the second inning, crossed a walk on two balks called against Red Raider fresh-man hurler Jordan Basta, the first one sending a runner across the plate.
Quintin Natividad tripled into deep right-center knotting the contest as two more Waimea runs crossed the plate.
Red Raider errors upped the Menehune ante, and in the fifth inning, Kane Zalopany led the Waimea charge with a two-RBI double that gave Waimea a 9-4 bulge.
Host Kapa‘a, meanwhile, suffered their second loss of the tournament at the hands of Pac 5 on Friday afternoon to set the stage for Saturday’s trio of games that will take place at the Ron Martin field in Kapa‘a.
Waimea will meet Pac 5 starting at 9 a.m. followed by Kapa‘a tangling with Kaua‘i starting at 11:30 a.m.
The championship game between the two leading teams following the 11:30 a.m. game will start at 2 p.m.
In the event of tied records, the tie breaker will be determined by number of runs, followed by number of hits, and the number of errors.
