After this season, the School Red slowing down the Mustangs at the Iolani Prep Classic earlier Kaua‘i High Raider basketball squad couldn’t keep up with the much improved Kalaheo Mustang team, who galloped over Kaua‘i, 66-53 in first round action in the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Neal Blaisdell Arena last night.
Turnovers plagued the Red Raiders from the start. With 14 total turnovers against Kalaheo, Kaua‘i was unable to keep pace with its season average of seven, which may have been the biggest reason for their downfall last night.
Also, the Mustangs shot the ball really well from beyond the arc, converting almost half of their three-point shots.
Kalaheo took control from the beginning of the game and held the advantage throughout the contest. Kaua‘i couldn’t penetrate through the tough defensive show put on by the Mustangs.
Leading the way for the Red Raiders were Futi Tavana with 19 points and eight boards, followed by Josh Bradbury with 12, and Jeremy Manuel with nine points. Kaua‘i now drops down to the consolation bracket and fails to get past the first round of the state tournament for the eighth straight year for a KIF team.
The Red Raiders face Kamehameha-Maui today at 12:30 p.m.
